He also visited the East and produced a series of Orientalist paintings in Ismir, Turkey. His works are highly appreciated for their attention to detail and architectural details rendered with clarity. He created both vedutas of old Dutch port cities such as Amsterdam and atmospheric, idealized Capriccios. August von Siegen devoted himself as a painter, especially cityscapes. Inspiration for his pictures he received on his trips to Venice, Rome, and Izmir. Many of his cityscapes show real places, but he often gave himself up to his own imagination.

AUGUST VON SIEGEN (Germany, 1850-1910). "Cairo Street". Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower right corner. Size: 98 x 142 cm (117 x 161 cm). The artist places us in front of an urban, luminous view, that is defined by a clear, clear, and intense sky, on which architectures of whitish tonalities are outlined. These stand out for their copulated forms, the semicircular arches, etc. A set that speaks to us of religious buildings such as the minaret that is arranged in the left zone of the composition. Returning to the foreground of the image, the view is completely clear, defined by a wide space, where various figures interact, thus showing the daily routine of everyday life. It is worth mentioning that this work is part of an advanced orientalist school, which leaves behind the beautiful odalisques, harems and slave markets to paint nothing more than what they see, the real Orient in all its daily dimension. Along with the change of vision comes a technical and formal change; since it is no longer a matter of recreating an imagined world in all its details, the brushstroke acquires impressionistic fluency, and the artists focus not so much on the depiction of the types and customs as on the faithful reflection of the atmosphere of the place, of the very identity of the North African populations. August Von Siegen was a German painter active in Munich and Vienna. Characterized by portraying lively cityscapes, seascapes and paintings with detailed architectural features. He was also considered an Orientalist artist. While little is known about this artist, his paintings depicting highly detailed landscapes and seascapes are highly sought after by collectors. Notably, the architectural details in Von Siegen's paintings possess a sharpness and a great sense of light and clarity. His 19th century Dutch and German street scenes and seascapes are among the most desirable subjects of this talented Austrian artist.

Charakteristische Straßenszene mit Minarett, Moschee und Figurenstaffage des österreichischen Orientalisten August von Siegen (geb. 1850 in Wien), der als Maler zumeist großformatiger repräsentativ-effektvoller Stadtansichten vor allem in München und Wien tätig war. Neben Venedig, Rom und Izmir lieferte auch die ägyptische Metropole am Nil Inspiration für mehrere seiner Gemälde, auf denen er das Treiben auf den Straßen und Plätzen Kairos vor einer, teils aus seiner Imagination ergänzten, prächtigen Architekturkulisse präsentiert. - Die doublierte Leinwand mit Rahmungsspuren, der Firnis etwas nachgedunkelt, kleinere Retuschen am oberen linken und unteren rechten Rand.

The inspection under UV light reveals some major areas of retouching to the sky and the water; these areas are somewhat discolored and visible to the naked eye. The reverse bears several patches. The wooden frame shows only light signs of use. The size of the painting is 98 x 102 cm, and the frame measures 117 x 161 cm.
