The painter devoted himself not only to landscape paintings but also portraits and cityscapes as well as themes from fairy tales and mythology. The style of the painting by Gottlieb Theodor von Kempf-Hartenkampf is characterized by incredible brilliance, a detailed display and refined sense of light, which is also expressed in this painting in which the artist applied soft golden highlights here and there on the mountain peaks, although the mostly cloudy sky overshadows the idyllic seascape. The oil painting on panel bears the incised signature and date 'G. Th v. Kempf 19' lower right and the artist's signature stamp. It is verso titled by the artist on a label 'Pyburgersee im Ötztal' and marked 'V.'. The wooden panel bears verso as well the burn mark 'G. Kempf'. The painting is in very good condition with minor signs of age and wear. The wooden panel measures 30 x 27.5 cm. The framed dimensions are 37.5 x 32 cm. Gottlieb Theodor von Kempf-Hartenkampf (1871-1964) Gottlieb Theodor von Kempf-Hartenkampf was born 1871 in Vienna. From 1888 to 1896 he studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts under Julius Victor Berger, Leopold Karl Müller and Josef Matthias von Trenkwald as well as August Eisenmenger. He undertook numerous study trips to Rome and Paris. The portrait, landscape and genre painter was also active as an etcher and illustrator and presented his works in the Vienna Künstlerhaus, the Vienna Secession, as well as in Munich and Dresden. For his artistic achievements Gottlieb Theodor von Kempf-Hartenkampf received, among others, the Great Golden Medal of Honour of the Vienna Künstlerhaus, the Master Award of the City of Vienna, the Waldmüller Prize as well as the State Prize.
