There is a paint loss at the upper left corner but the rest of the paint layer is in a good condition. The varnish is slightly yellowed. There are losses to the gilding on the frame and the glazing is dirty.

            Monogrammed and dated lower left: HvH 1904Monogrammed and dated lower left: HvH 1904Born in the Bavarian town of Waal in 1849, Herkomer moved to England with his parents whilst he was still a child, and it was there that he learnt to paint. Following a successful career as an artist, he later settled in the famous "Mutterturm" in Waal, which he converted into an eccentric studio. Today, the tower and the house next to it house the Herkomer museum.
