Paul von Franken, Landscape in the Caucasus

      Est: €12,000 - €14,000

Signed and dated lower right: PVFranken 1875 The painter Paul von Franken made a name for himself with landscapes from the Caucasus, even outside Germany. Together with his Latvian-born wife, he settled in Tbilisi in 1853 and travelled from there on behalf of the Russian government, primarily to the battlefields in the Caucasus. The landscapes and people of this region became his favourite motif - even after his return to Germany in 1860, as the present painting from 1875 shows.

1868. 84 cm x 116 cm. Rahmen. Lit.: Boetticher, Bd. I/1, S. 339; Thieme-Becker, Bd. XII, S. 356. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated 1868.

KAUKASISCHE BAUERN MIT BOOTEN Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 135 x 121 cm. Rechts unten signiert „P V Franken“ (teils in Ligatur) und datiert „1861“. In dekorativem Prunkrahmen. (12612110) (18) Paul von Franken, 1818 Oberbachem, Wachtberg - 1884 Düsseldorf CAUCASIAN FARMERS WITH BOATS Oil on canvas. Relined. 135 x 121 cm. Signed lower left: Franken 1873.Paul von Franken visited the Düsseldorf academy from 1840 to 1842, and later continued his studies in Antwerp and Dresden. He took a sojourn to Paris in 1851, followed by a further trip to Kurland/Latvia in 1852, where he spent a year in Mitau. He then travelled to St. Petersburg, Moscow and Caucasia together with his wife, the portrait painter Helene Köber, returning to his home town after several years in Tiflis. He spent the winter months in Düsseldorf and the summer in Godesberg (now Bad Godesberg in Bonn). The studies made during his stay in Caucasia provided inspiration for stunning landscapes over many years. The present work was made in 1873, after Franken's return to Germany. It shows a Caucasian landscape with snow-capped mountains and a group of riders dismounting in a small village in the foreground. The entire scene is bathed in a warm, soft light which lends this charming late Romantic composition an almost visionary air.

Paul von Franken, The Maiden Tower in Baku, Oil on Canvas, 1880

      Est: €50,000 - €65,000

Oil on canvas Germany, 1880 Paul von Franken (1818-1884) – German landscape and genre painter Signed and dated ‘P Franken 1880’ lower right Inscribed in handwriting on the reverse of the stretcher frame ‘Aus dem Kaukasus. Der Jungfrauen-Thurm in Baku am Kaspi(schen Meer) von Paul von Franken Deutschland‘ Framed: 114 x 150 cm Stretcher frame: 74,5 x 110 cm Good condition Provenance: Private property, Austria; private property, Germany Estimate by Auctionata Expert: 100,000 Euro An exceptional Caucasus motif by the painter. Depicted is the so called Virgin Tower in Baku Qiz Qualasi, which is the emblem of the old town of Azerbaijan’s capital until today and became part of UNESCO’s world cultural heritage. Comparable Caucasus motifs fetch up to 90,000 EUR on international auctions The atmospheric depiction of the Maiden Tower (Qis Qalasi) in Baku at moon light, is being ascribed to the late works of the artist Paul von Franken. There are several romantic legends about the building. The precise date of its construction is unknown, although the foundation walls were built at least in the 12th century. The legend says, that the daughter of Schirwanschah commissioned the building, after which she jumped from the tower, so she doesn’t have to marry the man chosen for her. Later on the construction was used as a defense tower and a mausoleum. In the late 19th century, when von Franken was staying in Caucasus, Baku had risen to be an important Russian trade port, so the tower became a lighthouse. Condition: Under UV-light several small retouches are to be noticed, especially in the sky area. The painting is in overall very good condition. The extensive ornamented gilt frame shows some traces of use. The shim frame measures 74,5 x 110 cm and the total frame dimensions are 114 x 150 cm. Paul von Franken (1818-1884) Paul von Franken was born in 1818 in Oberbachem near Bonn. 1841-42 he studies at the Dusseldorf Academy, before he starts making his study travels, at the end of which he settled in Dresden, where he lives until 1849. After his return to Dusseldorf, he marries his former student, the Baltic painter Helene Körber from Jelgava in Latvia. After several stays in Paris, Jelgava, St. Petersburg and Moscow, the married couple lives in Tifilis since 1853. By account of the Russian government von Franken travels in the Caucasus, where he documents theatres of war, landscapes and people. After he got back to Dusseldorf in 1860, he creates numerous paintings after his Caucasus sketches and becomes famous as the “Painter of Caucasus” in Dusseldorf. His works belong to Late Romanticism. A lot of paintings by von Franken are missing today, but they are still present in early exhibition catalogues. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.

      Est: £80,000 - £120,000

PAUL VON FRANKEN (1818-1884) View of the Maiden Tower in Baku , signed and dated 1880. Oil on canvas, 74.5 by 111 cm. Provenance: Private collection, Austria. Private collection, Germany. Authenticity of the work has been confirmed by the expert V. Petrov. This atmospheric late work by the German-born artist Paul von Franken depicts Baku's mysterious Maiden Tower which has long been the subject of romantic legend. The exact date and reason for its construction are to this day unknown, but it is at least as old as the 12th century. As the story goes, the tower was built at the request of the Shirvanshah's daughter who then threw herself from the top to escape marrying the man of her father's choice. Over the years the building has variously been used as a Zoroastrian temple, a defence tower and a mausoleum. By the late 19th century, when Franken painted View of the Maiden Tower in Baku, the city was an important Russian naval port in the grip of an oil boom and growing rapidly, due to the huge increase in navigation and trade, the Maiden Tower was converted into a lighthouse to guide in the ships and oil tankers.

Paul von Franken, attributed, "Caucasian landscape", 1868

      Est: €4,000 - €5,000

Oil on canvas Germany, 1868 Paul von Franken (1818-1884), attributed to - German landscape painter Dated "68." lower left Overall dimensions, framed: 60 x 78 cm Provenance: German private collection Among connoisseurs, Paul von Franken is considered the 'Painter of the Caucasus' The present painting of a Caucasian landscape is attributed to the German artist Paul von Franken who is also known as the "Painter of the Caucasus". After his studies at the Dusseldorf Academy of Arts, he travelled through the countries of the Caucasus and settled in the remote mountain regions until 1860, in order to study the local tribes. The present work compares to other compositions by Paul von Franken which date back to the 1970s. Here, a Caucasian landscape impression is reflected with a fine sense of atmosphere and light. In the center, there is a mountain hut depicted with a stable, glowing in the deep red of the setting sun. A small figure of a herdsman can be detected in front of the shed, who seems to watch the little goat on the opposite, on top of the lower right ledge. In the background, the valleys of the mountain panorama sink into a soft blue veil, before the sun will disappear in the forthcoming moment. The canvas is unlined and shows framing marks on the edges. Furthermore, it shows a small punch at the upper left side. In the areas of the sky the painting is a little stained and has some small losses of color. Underneath the mountain hut, there is a small rubbed spot which appears in a matte white color. In parts you find tiny scattered retouchings. On the right side of the sky, tiny voids can also be seen. The work is dated "68." at the lower left. The stretcher measures 47 cm in height and 65.5 cm in width. The wooden frame shows small traces of use and measures 60 x 78 cm. Paul von Franken (1818-1884) The artist Paul von Franken received his artistic training at the Dusseldorf Academy of Arts, before he went on his journeys to Dresden, Antwerp and Brussels. In 1852, he spent a year in the Latvian Courland, which was followed by a tour to Tbilisi, via St. Petersburg and Moscow. Franke, deeply impressed by the landscapes he had seen, decided to study and depict the local customs and remote Caucasian tribes, presumably until 1860. Today, works by Paul von Franken are mainly located in Baltic private collections.

PAUL VON FRANKEN (BAD GODESBERG 1818-1884 DÜSSELDORF) Figures on the Shore of the Black Sea,

      Est: £15,000 - £20,000

PAUL VON FRANKEN (BAD GODESBERG 1818-1884 DÜSSELDORF) Figures on the Shore of the Black Sea, signed and dated "PVFranken 18.52." (lower right). Oil on canvas, 95 by 124.5 cm. Provenance: Private collection, UK. This Romantic painting combines the traditional genre theme with a landscape painting. The couple is carrying blankets and a cane basket filled with dishes, glasses and cutlery suggesting that the party is going for a picnic on the shore. The two figures are subtlely turned towards each other expressing feelings of affection, which is emphasised by their reciprocal gazes. Since the work was completed in 1852, the year that Paul von Franken married his Latvian wife Helen Korber, it is possible that the artist might have been inspired by his own private life. Although the precise location of the painting cannot be discerned, it is plausible to suggest that the costal landscape represents the Black Sea shore. Von Franken was particularly moved by the beauty of the Black Sea and of the Caucasian landscape and chose to move to Georgia with his wife in 1853. Although he travelled extensively, visiting Moscow and St. Petersburg, he continued to paint his favourite Black Sea and Caucasian landscapes even upon his return to Düsseldorf in 1861. Von Franken's ability as an excellent draughtsman is demonstrated here in the construction of the composition. There are several perspective lines which create a harmonious and well balanced rhythm throughout. The immediate focus is the group in the foreground and from here the eye of the viewer is drawn to follow the path towards the mountains. Here, the viewer is struck by the sunlight in the sky and is led through the light in the clouds to the top of the mountains, towards the darker area of the sky on the right of the composition. Another distinctive perspective line runs from the lower left corner, through the group in the foreground, past the figures in the background and ending on the horizon on the sea. The contrast between the light and darker areas of the clouds plays an important role in creating depth throughout the composition, a device employed in most of his oeuvre.

FRANKEN, PAUL VON (Bad Godesberg 1818 - 1884 Dusseldorf) Crane hunt. 1872. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated lower left: Franken. 1872. 107 x 162 cm. FRANKEN, PAUL VON (Bad Godesberg 1818 - 1884 Düsseldorf) Kranichjagd. 1872. Öl auf Leinwand. Unten links signiert und datiert: Franken. 1872. 107 x 162 cm.
