    • Baldassarre Franceschini detto il Volterrano (Volterra 1611 - Firenze 1690)
      Feb. 20, 2024

Baldassarre Franceschini detto il Volterrano (Volterra 1611 - Firenze 1690)

      Est: €8,000 - €12,000

Baldassarre Franceschini also called il Volterrano (Volterra 1611 - Florence 1690) David With the Head of Goliath Oil on canvas 88 x 75,5 cm The artwork in question finds particular congruence with the figure of Perseus With the Head of Medusa, preserved at the Staatgalerie Schleissheim in Munich (inv. no. 22444), and published on page 222, figure 63, of the monographic text Volterano a curated by Maria Celia Fabbri, Alessandro Grassi and Riccardo Spinelli.

      Est: €15,000 - €20,000

JOHANNES DER TÄUFER Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 100 x 74,5 cm. In vergoldetem Prunkrahmen. Beigegeben eine Expertise von Prof. Pierluigi Carofano, Pisa, vom 12. Oktober 2020. Retuschen. (1271861) (3) (18) Baldassare Franceschini, also known as “Il Volterrano”, 1611 – 1689 SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST Oil on canvas. Relined. 100 x 74.5 cm. Accompanied by an expert’s report by Professor Pierluigi Carofano, Pisa, dated 12 October 2020.

Baldassare Franceschini, Il Volterrano (Volterra, 1611 - Florence, 1689)

      Est: €40,000 - €60,000

Baldassare Franceschini, Il Volterrano (Volterra, 1611 - Florence, 1689) Oil on canvas. 92 x 73 cm. Baroque Florentine painter, he was known for his frescoes, but also for his easel paintings. The son of a sculptor, he first studied with Cosimo Daddi in Volterra, moving to Florence in 1628 and joining the Matteo Rosselli workshop. In Florence in 1636 he received his first important commission from Lorenzo de Medici, who engaged him to decorate the Villa La Petraia with scenes illustrating the Medici family history. Franceschini took twelve years to finish it, but it meant that his position as best-known fresco painter was assured among the nobility. In 1652, or thereabouts, he completed the frescoes begun by Pietro da Cortona at the Palazzo Pitti. The frescoes in the Saint Cecile and Saint Lucy chapels in the Santissima Annunziata, those at Orlandi Chapel and the Santa Maria Maggiore chapel, and those at the Niccolini Chapel in the Santa Croce, and those in the dome of the Santissima Annunziata, are also his. They are all in Florence. Many museums have his paintings in their collections, including the Uffizi and the Palazzo Pitti in Florence, the San Francisco Museum of Fine Arts and the Staatsgalerie in Stuttgart.

      u - *Baldassare Franceschini, called Il Volterrano1611-1690

      Est: $25,000 - $35,000

Red chalk heightened with white chalk. This lot contains 1 item(s). This is a preparatory study, with differences, for the soldier in the left foreground of the scene representing Cosimo de'Medici giving the Granducato to his son Ferdinando de' Medici, (figure 1), part of the decoration of the courtyard at the Villa Petraia, near Florence. Volterrano, commissioned by Don Lorenzo de' Medici, painted these two groups of frescoes beneath the twin loggias of the internal courtyard of the Villa between 1636 and 1648. The many drawings related to the commission demonstrate that he prepared every scene with great care (see C. McCorquodale, Drawings by Baldassare Franceschini called Il Volterrano, sale catalogue, London, Sotheby's, 3 July 1980, p.15). Each figure was first studied from the nude and then clothed, and in many cases details were redrawn showing different solutions, and the rethinking of even small decorative embellishments.
