      • Oil Painting "Portrait of Helmut Wirth", by Max Vollmberg, 1930
        Sep. 20, 2013

Oil Painting "Portrait of Helmut Wirth", by Max Vollmberg, 1930

        Est: €240 - €300

Oil on canvas Germany, 1930 Max Vollmberg (1882-?), German painter Lower right side signed and dated, "Max Vollmberg 1930" Framed behind glass Overall dimensions: 80 x 90 cm Very good condition This delightful portrait of a child shows a small boy in a blue garment sitting in a green meadow. The entire background consists of slightly undulated meadows in green and the light blue sky above. The boy, whose name according to the inscription on the reverse side is Helmut Wirth, sits sideways towards the viewer looking intently at something outside of the painting while a red and white ball and a small, white wooden horse lie around him. The background appears sketchy, the brushwork is visible and the artist obviously was not concerned with depicting an actual landscape. This is quite contrary to the child: the face is so smooth that brushstrokes can only be seen at close range. Every line, every nuance of colour is chosen and painted precisely; evidently, an accurate representation of the reality in this case was Vollmberg's ambition. The painting is in very good condition. The large gold frame is also in very good condition with minor traces of wear. The painting is protected by a glass panel. It is signed and dated, "Max Vollmberg. 1930", on the lower right side and inscribed, "Helmut Wirth, geb. 19.08.1926 in Berlin. Gemalt von Max Volmberg. Berlin 1930", on the reverse. The overall dimensions are 80 x 90 cm while the dimensions of the stretcher frame are 63 x 76 cm. Max Vollmberg (1882-?) Vollmberg was born in Berlin and received his training there. Among his teachers were Philipp Frank Meyerheim and Lovis Corinth, and later in Paris, Jean-Paul Laurens. In 1912 he travelled to Central America, which influenced him heavily. He published various histories from Middle America and also participated in discoveries of Mayan monuments. The Museum of Modern Art in San Salvador, El Salvador, possesses one of his landscape paintings.
