    • AMERICAN INTERIOR OIL PAINTING BY LOUIS CHARLES VOGT
      Jul. 08, 2023

AMERICAN INTERIOR OIL PAINTING BY LOUIS CHARLES VOGT

      Est: $100 - $150

Louis Charles Vogt, American, 1864 to 1939, oil painting on canvas depicting an interior scene. Signed lower right. Framed. Provenance: Time and Again Auction Gallery, Hightstown, NJ, United States, September 17, 2010, lot 862. Louis Charles Vogt was born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1864. A talented painter, Vogt employed a free style of brushstroke and often rendered forms with broad, sweeping strokes. His studies at the Cincinnati Art Academy with Frank Duveneck had a profound impact on his work. His subject matter and style were also reminiscent of the Ashcan School, a group of New York painters who rejected the fantasies of American Impressionism in favor of a more realistic chronicle of 20th century life. Vogt was an avid traveler and adventurer who savored life and appreciated each experience as it unfolded. He spent much of his life traveling about the U.S. as an illustrator for Harpers and Century magazines. One of a kind artwork.

Louis Charles Vogt American, 1864-1939 National Turnfest Competition, Cincinnati Signed L. C. Vogt. (lr); bears inscription James J. Dailey on the reverse Oil on canvas 20 x 24 inches Provenance: Private collection, MA After many years as an itinerant artist, Louis Charles Vogt returned to his native Cincinnati, where he developed a reputation for landscapes and cityscapes in the realist mode of the Ashcan School. In this painting, he recorded the 30th National Turnfest Competition, held June 19-27, 1909. Put on by the American Gymnastics Union, it attracted gymnasts from around the world. The classic structure in the painting was erected on Government Square (Fifth Street) in Cincinnati, with a reviewing stand facing it. While recording this event for posterity, Vogt also conveyed the exciting nature of the spectacle through a view into the crowd that extends in all directions, the illumination of the white structure at night, and the presence of the flags of many nations, some hanging from the windows of the darkened building at the left.
