      Ludwig Vogel (1810 Hildburghausen - 1870 Tambach): Castle in Ostia, c. 1840, Oil Technique: Oil on Paper, mounted on Cardboard Inscription: labelled on the verso of the support: "Ostia" Date: c. 1840 Description: The signature on another painting from the group of works presented here points to the Thuringian painter Ludwig Vogel (1810-1870), who worked in Rome from 1837 to 1846, as the author of our works, and not to the Swiss co-founder of the Lukasbund, Georg Ludwig Vogel, who worked there from 1810 to 1813. From Rome, Ludwig Vogel, who came from Hildburghausen and was accompanied by his brother Heinrich from 1844-45, exhibited landscapes, genre paintings and portraits at the Dresden Art Exhibition in 1838; he was also represented at the exhibitions of the Berlin Academy in 1842, 44 and 48. Before his return to Altenberg, Vogel must have enjoyed the counter-world of the German artists' community in Rome, as he took an active part in the satirical artists' festivals of the Ponte Molle on several occasions and captured the Cervara Festival, which continued to be held after the founding of the Deutscher Künstlerverein in 1845, in pictures.
