    • Signed 20th C. Carlos Viver Painting - Adam & Eve
      May. 14, 2020

Signed 20th C. Carlos Viver Painting - Adam & Eve

      Est: $3,500 - $5,000

Carlos Viver (Ecuador, b. 1948), "Eva y Adan Bajo Toldo" (Eve and Adam Under an Awning), mixed media on canvas, ca. 20th century CE. Signed on lower right. A striking composition depicting Adam and Eve - at once figural yet abstract and painted in a striking black and grey palette. Viver's style is so expressive and explores various techniques, layering pigments and incising passages through the thick pigments. Born in Quito in 1948, Viver was among a generation of Ecuadoran artists who employed grotesque qualities as a form of protest against traditional 'beautiful' aesthetics which Viver believed coincided with ideology of the State. His expressive style which gives the impression of being built on different layers/levels is a political reflection of the violence in society. Also intrigued by the supernatural, Viver gave free reign to his imagination. Finally, Viver reveled in the subject of women, and this piece depicts Adam and Eve, the first woman, according to the Book of Genesis. Size: 27.5" L x 19.625" W (69.8 cm x 49.8 cm) World-renowned Ecuadorian painter Carlos Viver has won numerous awards throughout his career including: First Place Award in Diogenes Paredes 1973; First Place National Award, Salon De Paris, Quito, 1979; and First Place Award at the Salon Mariano Aquilera, Quito, 1980, among many others. Viver has had 23 solo expositions worldwide, and has participated in 200 collective expositions. Currently, a somewhat larger signed painting by Viver is listed for $12,000 at the PicassoMio gallery - https://www.picassomio.com/carlos-viver/112524.html Provenance: private Andrade collection, New York, New York, USA, acquired in the 1960s; ex-Knoedler & Company All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
