    Camillo de Vito Vedute di Napoli. Italy, [early nineteenth century] Folio (405 x 270mm.), an album so-titled on spine, 59 watercolour drawings in gouache, many signed lower right, captioned at foot, contemporary green morocco gilt Spectacular gouache drawings of Naples and environs, including 10 of an erupting Vesuvius. De Vito was a noted local artist specialising in this popular genre. This collection has a distinguished English provenance, being from the library of the noted bibliophile Frances Mary Richardson Currer (1785–1861). Thomas Frognall Dibdin wrote of her library: “I may honestly say, that with the exception of Althorp, Chatsworth, and Stowe, I know of NO such collection of books, situated in the country that can pretend to break a lance with it” (A Bibliographical and Picturesque Tour).     Nächtlicher Ausbruch des Vesuv im Jahr 1822. Gouache auf Velin. 39,5 x 71,5 cm. Links unterhalb der Darstellung undeutlich signiert "Camillo de Vito", im unteren Rand in italienischer Sprache bez. "Eruz[ione] del 1822". Im Oktober 1822 tauchte der feuerbrünstige Ausbruch des Vesuv den dunklen Nachthimmel über dem Golf von Neapel in ein dramatisches, glutrotes Licht. Dieses Inferno faszinierte den Betrachter und ließ ihn zugleich erschaudern. Ein Augenzeuge berichtet „ich beeile mich, E. E. zu melden, dass schon fünf Viertelstunden der Vesuv das schrecklichste Schauspiel eines der heftigsten Ausbrüche darzubieten begonnen hat. Das Getöse im Inneren des Bergs ist fürchterlich und währt an einem fort: Bereits ergiesst sich auch aus seinem Krater einer Menge feuriger Lava, in zwey entgegengesetzten Richtungen, der eine Strom gegen Ottajano der andere gegen Resina hin. Keines der Zeichen, welche wir als Vorboten der vulkanischen Eruptionen zu betrachten gewohnt sind, war diesmal bemerkbar. Ganz unerwartet kömmt das Ereigniss, um desto grösser ist auch der Schrecken, welchen dasselbe unter den hiesigen Ortsbewohnern verbreitet […]“ (Syndicus von Torre del Greco, den 22.
