Pauleus Vital (Haitian, 1917-1984) Untitled (Agricultural Work Scene), dated 1981, oil on masonite, 21'' x 17''/ 53 x 43 cm. Framed: 22.5'' x 18.5''/ 57 x 47 cm. Jacmel born, half brother of Prefete Duffaut, Vital was a cabinetmaker turned artist who joined the Centre d'Art, Port-au-Prince, yet lived in Jacmel most of the time. Vital painted Jacmel town scenes as well as Vodou spiritual engagement and ceremonies in a full palette of color.

Pauleus Vital (1917-1984) Haitian - "The Village" Pauleus Vital was a Haitian artist. He was born in Jacmel, in October 1917. He grew up learning to build boats, and cabinets, and at age 21 he moved to Port-au-Prince to further his building career. At age 38, Vital started to paint, after his half-brother Prefete Duffaut, introduced him to Centre d'Art. He spent 3 years at Centre d'Art, then moved back to Jacmel in 1959. Much of the motivation for his work comes from his home by the river in Jacmel. His work consists of detailed paintings, of everything from Haitian courtyards, countryside's, and subterranean Vodou ceremonies. This is one of Pauleus' typical Village scenes. Blinding Vibrancy, it is gorgeous. It measures 93cm wide by 62cm high
