[CANALETTO] - VISENTINI, Antonio (1688-1782) da Giovanni Antonio CANAL (1697-1768, detto 'Il Canaletto') - Urbis Venetiarum prospectus celebriores. Venice: Giovanni Battista Pasquale, 1742-51. An excellent copy with the first part dated 1742 and the second and third 1751; the second part with the "balestra" watermarks and the countermark Z. The renowned work by Visentini "had a fundamental importance both for the international promotion of Canaletto, and for the absolute novelty represented by the layout of the images whose sequence marks a turning point in the way of looking at the city for the first time rendered in its dynamic unfolding" (from the exhibition catalogue of the Carigo Foundation). The views follow a magical itinerary through the Grand Canal, from Rialto to the basin of San Marco, unfolding in the 38 magnificent views. The first edition, composed of only 14 views, title and frontispiece, was published in 1735 probably for private circulation: only a very few copies have survived to this day. The initiative was by Joseph Smith (1682-1770), who later became British consul in Venice; it is now well established that there was an agreement between Canaletto and Smith to spread the artist's views to the English market by creating a sort of "sample book" to make them known across the Channel. In 1742 Smith entrusted his partner, the publisher Pasquali, to publish what is considered to be the first complete edition; in this edition Visentini concentrated on trying to obtain better lighting effects and improving the effects of the water; the plates are of even better quality probably also thanks to the direct involvement of Canaletto himself. The two portraits were also redone. This first complete edition was followed by two other practically identical editions: the one from 1751, which differs only in the new date placed on the titles, and the one from 1754, the last edited by Pasquali. There are also copies of the subsequent editions that contain plates from the first edition: Smith did not feel like destroying the unused copper plates from the first edition, or maybe some collectors, who already owned the first edition, decided to complete the work purchased later by inserting the plates from the "pars prima" of 1735. Two copies of this type are preserved in the Correr Museum, one with the date of 1742 and the other of 1751. 3 parts in one volume, oblong folio (362 x 505mm). Titles in red and black with engraved device for each part illustrating Minerva with a shield and a book with the motto: "Litterarum felicitas", engraved prospectus dated MDCCXLII, portraits of Canaletto and Visentini in second state with engraved titled "Ex monochromate Io. Bapt. Piazzetta, Ant. Visintini Inv. Del. e Sculp.", index and respectively XIV, 12 and XII plates for each part for a total of 38. First part with armorial crowned lily and countermark "IV"; second part with "balestra" and the countermark "Z"; third part with "AS" and "IV" to some plates (very light halo on title to left of printer's device, some light foxing and minimal browning, a few small marginal tears sometimes repaired). La città viene attraversata percorrendo un magico itinerario sul Canal Grande: da Rialto fino al bacino di San Marco, attraverso 38 magnifiche vedute. La prima edizione, composta da solo 14 vedute, titolo e frontespizio, venne pubblicata nel 1735 probabilmente per circolare privatamente: sono infatti pochissime le copie ad oggi sopravvissute. Nel 1742 Smith si affida al suo socio, l'editore Pasquali, per pubblicare quella che viene considerata la prima edizione completa; in questa il Visentini si concentra nel cercare di ottenere migliori effetti di luminosità e nel migliorare gli effetti dell'acqua e le tavole sono di fattura ancora migliore probabilmente anche grazie all'intervento diretto dello stesso Canaletto. Vengono anche rifatti i due ritratti. A questa prima edizione completa seguono due altre edizioni praticamente identiche: quella del 1751 che differisce solo per la nuova data apposta sui titoli tipografici di ciascuna parte e quella del 1754, l'ultima curata dal Pasquali. Esistono anche esemplari delle edizioni successive che contengono tavole della prima edizione; lo Smith infatti non si sentì di distruggere i fogli della prima edizione rimasti inutilizzati, oppure alcuni collezionisti già in possesso della prima edizione avrebbero talvolta deciso di completare l'opera acquistata successivamente inserendo le tavole della "pars prima" del 1735. Due esemplari di questo tipo sono in possesso del Museo Correr, uno con la data di edizione del 1742 e l'altro del 1751. 3 parti in un volume, folio oblungo, (362 x 505mm). Nella prima parte la filigrana con il fiore di giglio in stemma coronato e contromarca "IV"; nella seconda parte filigrana della balestra e la contomarca "Z"; terza parte con filigrana "AS" e "IV" ad alcune tavole (lievissimo alone al frontespizio a sinistra della marca tipografica, alcune lievi fioriture e minime bruniture, pochi piccoli strappetti marginali tavolta riparati). The Church of Saint Roch (Italian: Chiesa di San Rocco) is a Roman Catholic church dedicated to Saint Roch in Venice, northern Italy. It was built between 1489 and 1508 by Bartolomeo Bon the Younger, but was substantially altered in 1725. The façade dates from 1765 to 1771,[1] and was designed by Bernardino Maccarucci. The church is one of the Plague-churches built in Venice.[2] St. Roch, whose relics rest in the church after their transfer from Voghera (trad. Montpellier), was declared a patron saint of the city in 1576. Every year, on his feast day (16 August), the Doge made a pilgrimage to the church. Near the church is the Scuola Grande di San Rocco, noted for its numerous Tintoretto paintings. (Venezia, 1688 - 1782) Capriccio architettonico Olio su tela, cm 41X68 Formatosi con il Pellegrini l'artista predilesse gli studi di architettura, rivolgendosi con successo anche all'arte incisoria, traducendo magistralmente le vedute di Canaletto e le creazioni di Marco Ricci. Il corpus dell'artista è alquanto scarno, ma a questo proposito è curioso notare come l'aspetto meno indagato della sua produzione sia proprio quello che riguarda l'attività pittorica, che pure aveva precocemente intrapreso. La sua produzione dipana l'evolversi delle ricerche dedicate al classicismo edilizio del Settecento veneto.

Brustbildnis des Schauspielers Thomassin als Arlecchino. Radierung. 40,8 x 31,1 cm. Le Blanc I, S. 323, IFF II, S. 464. Der Schauspieler Thomassin (eigentl. Tommaso Antonio Visentini, 1683-1739) ist als berühmter Arlecchino in die Geschichte der Commedia dell’Arte eingegangen. Er spielte den Arlequin der Comédie-Italienne im Pariser Hôtel de Bourgogne. Seine frechen lazzi - die improvisierten Zwischenspiele der Commedia dell’Arte - erfreuten das Publikum und schockierten die Kritik. Mit einem selbstbewussten, gleichzeitig spöttischen Lächeln tritt Thomassin in Blickkontakt mit dem Betrachter. Die schwarze Maske in der Rechten und das Barrett mit Fuchsschwanz kennzeichnen den Arlecchino traditionell. Der Reim unter der Darstellung zieht eine Parallele zwischen der Naturimitation Thomassins im Schauspiel und der Bewahrung seiner Ausdruckskraft im Bilde. Die Radierung ist eines der zwei einzig bekannten Blätter, die die Tätigkeit des Künstlers T(homas) Bertrand in Paris belegen, und ist äußerst selten. Als Vorlage diente ein Portrait in Pastell von Maurice Quentin de La Tour aus dem Jahre 1739 (Besnard/Wildenstein 1928, 506).
