      VINCENC VINGLER 1911 - 1981 - ELEPHANT CALF

      Est: -

Vincenc Vingler, a sculptor, ceramist and designer who represented Czechoslovakia at international exhibitions many times and became famous for his exterior sculptures for the Prague Zoo, has maintained a partial distance from the prevailing artistic trends throughout his life. The departure from traditional figurative sculpture perfectly describes the register of his work, which is recognizable by its minimalism, through which he has reached the very threshold of abstract expression. Interested in the psychology of animals, their movements and characteristic gestures, he excelled in his sense of material and delicate workmanship, which allowed him to express the very soul of the animal, as evidenced by the playfulness of the offered chamber sculpture Elephant. The departure from traditional figurative sculpture perfectly describes the register of his work, which is recognizable by its minimalism, through which he has reached the very threshold of abstract expression. Interested in the psychology of animals, their movements and characteristic gestures, he excelled in his sense of material and fine workmanship, which enabled him to express the very soul of the animal, as evidenced by the artist's famous sculpture, The Crow. "The artist has here reached out to our most commonplace bird, and has produced an exquisite sculpture of firm tawr and rich expression: all the cleverness of the crow and its audacity are there." The dimension given is without the plinth. Published: Mašín, Jiří: Contemporary Profiles of Vincenc Vingler, Sculptures of Animals. The Publishing House of Czechoslovak Fine Artists, Prague, 1957. p. 24. Signed: signed on the plinth: VINGLER 52

This graceful example of a sculpture of a Monkey in patinated bronze exhibits not only the elegance of sculptural invention but also the urgency of the sculpture's expression and gesture. Vingler was trained at the UMPRUM in Prague under professors Jan Lauda and Karel Štipl. He worked as a set designer at the Unitarie Theatre and the Prague Youth Theatre of Mila Mellanová, as a set designer at the theatre in Kladno, and collaborated with the Horácké Theatre in Jihlava. He devoted himself to sculpture and drawing, thematically to sculptures of birds, animals and their drawings. Only at the end of his life did he create human figures. From 1949 he was a designer of the Czechoslovak Ceramic Works, a member of the Union of Artists of Fine Arts and from 1947 a member of the Art Beseda. Capturing the psychology of the animal and a distinctive work that departs from traditional human figures perfectly describes the register of the artist Vincent Vingler. He kept his distance from fashionable trends in art and created his own world full of animals. Although his contemporaries were primarily concerned with anthropocentric work and emphasizing the magnificence of the man, Vingler consistently counterbalanced this tendency and did not diminish the importance of the depiction of the animal in art. The work on offer comes from the important collection of the Czech painter Ota Janeček. Signed: Signed on the bottom VINGLER

Capturing of animal psychology and original work deviated from traditional human figures perfectly captures the artwork of the author Vincent Vingler. He kept his distance from fashion trends in fine arts and created his own world full of animals. Although his contemporaries sought primarily anthropocentric creation and emphasis on human grandeur, Vingler consistently counterbalanced this tendency and did not diminish the importance of depicting the animal in the art. He tried to find a simplified form that perfectly captured the essence of the animal itself. Published by: Markéta Vinglerová: Vincenc Vingler, Heinz Theuerjahr - Animals / Animals, 2015. CHARGING BULL

      Est: -

Insight into the psychology of the beast, distinctive pieces that depart from traditional human figures – these are the attributes that define Vincenc Vingler’s work. Vingler kept a healthy distance from art trends, creating his own world filled with animals. Although his fellow artists strove for anthropocentric forms and emphasized the grandiosity of man, Vingler conscientiously built an antithesis to these trends and did not belittle the meaning behind animal depictions in art. Bulls have been featured in art for approximately 40,000 years, and high-spirited bulls (from his Corrida series) defy his calm works filled with delicate emotion: they are full of beastly energy, emphasized by a texture that is somewhat coarser than regularly seen in Vingler’s work. Published in: Vincenc Vingler exhibition catalogue Sochy zvířat [Animal Sculptures], O. Malá, J. Wollner, J. Kotalík, 2012, p. 108.
