                Contrex - Woman on Black is a 1974 French advertisement for Contrex Mineral Water by Bernard Villemot (1909-1989). The advertisement continues Villemot's signature use of nude beauties in his advertising artwork. Contrex mineral water has diuretic properties and was advertised towards women as a way to keep slim. Bernard Villemot (1911-1989) was one of the foremost poster artists in the 1960's and 1970's, known for his innovative design and use of color. Born into a bourgeoisie family, his artistic pursuit was encouraged by his father, who was a well-known cartoonist. Villemot received training at the famous L'Ecole Paul, a school for poster artists founded and taught by famed poster artist Paul Colin. To many, he represents the end of the age when most of the poster designers are trained artists. As the world began to shift in the 1960s towards ad agencies and graphic design implemented by art departments, Villemot stood firm in his belief that the only way to advertise effectively "was to treat a poster as though it were a painting". His distinctive style was commissioned by many prominent advertisers, most notably Orangina, Perrier, and Bally.                 Orangina Light is a 1989 French beverage advertisement by Bernard Villemot (1909-1989) for the popular soft drink. This large format poster makes excellent use of Villemot's narrow composition to infer the slimming nature of the diet drink. Villemot is known for his use of fashion models in his advertising artwork. Here the lady's large hat alludes to the orange peel logo of the company. Orangina is a carbonated beverage made from a mixture of citrus fruits that contain no artificial coloring. The drink made its debut in 1935 and is known for its signature bottle design which features pebbled glass to mimic the feel of an orange peel. Bernard Villemot developed the Orangina swirl logo to solve a French advertising regulation that prohibited the depiction of fruit on advertising for drinks with less than 20% juice content. The orange swirl logo has precedent in the 1920's advertising of Leonetto Cappiello and his artwork for Bitter Campari.                 This is an extremely rare poster by Bernard Villemot. It was created in 1964 to promote the clarity of the Thomson Ducretet television set, and highlights the broad range of Villemot's extensive talents. A highly stylized and detailed image of a skier projects out of the TV, onto an elegant and loosely drawn lounging woman. The loose linework on the reclining lady helps to contrast with the extremely clear image of the television, which we are told highlights the "purity of lines". Eugene Ducretet (1844 - 1915) founded his eponymous company in 1864 as an inventor and scientist in the very early years of radio development. Ducretet sold radios, phonographs, and telegraphs and was sold to Thomson in 1931. Thomson is a massive retailer of electronic consumer goods such as televisions, radios, and transmitters to this day. Bernard Villemot (1911-1989) was one of the foremost poster artists in the 1960's and 1970's, known for his innovative design and use of color. Born into a bourgeoisie family, his artistic pursuit was encouraged by his father, who was a well-known cartoonist. Villemot received training at the famous L'Ecole Paul, a school for poster artists founded and taught by famed poster artist Paul Colin. To many, he represents the end of the age when most of the poster designers are trained artists. As the world began to shift in the 1960s towards ad agencies and graphic design implemented by art departments, Villemot stood firm in his belief that the only way to advertise effectively "was to treat a poster as though it were a painting". His distinctive style was commissioned by many prominent advertisers, most notably Orangina, Perrier, and Bally.                 Contrex is a circa 1970 French advertisement for Contrex Mineral Water by Bernard Villemot (1909-1989). The advertisement continues Villemot's signature use of nude beauties in his advertising artwork. The image features a nude woman happily wrapped around a bottle of Contrex in a bedroom. Contrex mineral water has diuretic properties and was advertised towards women as a way to keep in shape. The text reads "Trust Contrex with a reasonable meal" and implies that the drink is great pairing with any meal.
