    • 2 Villasmil Dimensional Drawings - "Imaginary Beings"
      Sep. 14, 2023

2 Villasmil Dimensional Drawings - "Imaginary Beings"

      Est: $400 - $600

Edwin Villasmil (Venezuelan, b. 1947). Two ink drawings from "Imaginary Beings" series, 1972. Motorcycle rider drawing is signed "Villasmil NY 1972" on the vehicle. A pair of striking artworks by contemporary Venezuelan artist Edwin Villasmil. During his childhood, the sounds of trains ignited Villasmil's imagination and prompted him to create art that fused the world of the organic with that of the machine as demonstrated by these two works. The first depicts a motorcycle rider who is part bearded man, part feathery bird, and part wind-up toy. His motorcycle is fit with phallic entities at the end of the handlebars as well as the seat. Paired with this is an imaginative, dimensional drawing of a tank-like vehicle with a large phallus extending from the front end and a large single eye peeking out from the window. The wheels, smoke plumes, and trunk compartment pop out from the piece to create a three dimensional aesthetic. Two fabulous pieces from Villasmil's "Imaginary Beings" series that demonstrate the artist's unique renderings of figures that are somewhat cheeky and somewhat dehumanized via his blend of a mechanical sensibility and a comic book aesthetic with touches of eroticism as well. A key contributor to the Nueva Figuracion (New Figuration) movement, Villasmil has created works that are always expressionistic and imaginative. Size (sight view motorcycle rider): 12.625" L x 16.625" W (32.1 cm x 42.2 cm) Size (frame): 13.625" L x 17.625" W (34.6 cm x 44.8 cm) Size (3-D drawing): 11.2" L x 14.2" W (28.4 cm x 36.1 cm) About the artist: "Edwin Villasmil began his artistic career in theater and painting. Between 1965 and 1989, he studied at Universidad Pedagogica. In 1972, he moved to the United States and lived in New York and Washington, D.C., while studying graphic arts, sculpture, jazz and theater. In 1975, upon his return to Venezuela, he founded Espacios Culturales and taught. In 1979 after undertaking a trip for observations and study through Europe and North Africa, when he returned home, he moved from the city to the country, where he developed a series of environmental projects. In 1998, he received his Bachelors of Arts from the University Fermin Toro. In 2002, he participated in the International Festival Antonio Gaudi in Barcelona, Spain. In recent years, he has investigated the relationship between art, society, and nature. He has been honored with important awards and acknowledgements, his art works are in museums, private and public collections, he had had several publications and renown critics have taken notice of his works. In the past, he has been president of the Venezuelan Association of Artists of the Plastic Arts. He is a member in good standing of the Asociacion Internacional de Artes Plasticas (UNESCO).
