Eugenio Lucas Villaamil Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1858 - d. 1918

Eugenio Lucas Villaamil, sometimes called "The Younger" (14 January 1858 – 23 January 1918) was a Spanish costumbrista painter. Many of his works were painted in the style of Francisco de Goya;[1] and the attributions are sometimes confused.

He was born in Madrid. Although the circumstances surrounding his identity and legitimacy were once quite uncertain,[2] it is now agreed that he was the legitimate son of the painter, Eugenio Lucas Velázquez and his wife, Francisca, the youngest sister of Jenaro Pérez Villaamil. His first art lessons were in his father's studio and his formal studies were at the "Escuela Especial de Pintura de Madrid". He made his début at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts shortly after graduating.[3]

His paintings always showed the influence of his father. He specialized in Aragonese themes; notably in his bullfight scenes which were often very ornate. Traditional costumbrista scenes of Madrid, featuring colorful majas and chisperos, were also one of his fortés and were very popular. Many of his early works were 18th century tableaus.

He made copies of many of Goya's paintings, from the Museo del Prado and the private collection of José Lázaro Galdiano. He also painted frescoes in Galdiano's home, which is now a museum.[3] In addition, he was popular as a portrait painter among the bourgeoisie and, in contrast to his costumbrista works, also provided them with scenes from high society; often with a Parisian flavor.

Despite his popularity and his being awarded the Order of Charles III,[citation needed] he never quite emerged from the shadow of his father. In fact, some of his works were mistakenly attributed to his father and are still in the process of being properly identified.[3] He died in Madrid, aged 60.

EUGENIO LUCAS VILLAAMIL Madrid (1858) / (1918) “Sketches for the ceilings of the music room and the comedy room of the Parque Florido palace, by Don Jose Lazaro Galdiano”

        Est: €15,000 - €20,000

Pair of oil paintings on canvas. Signed in the lower left corner. Don Jose Lazaro Galdiano, businessman, intellectual and great art collector, was a pioneer in the recovery of “The Lucas”. Studying the figure of Eugenio Lucas Velazquez, a romantic painter with clear Goyesque affiliations, he made contact with his son, Eugenio Lucas Villaamil, who at that time was living in poverty. He was fascinated by his work and acquired a good number of his paintings, also commissioning several frescoes from the Parque Florido palace, his former residence, which today houses the state museum that bears his name. Examples of the decorative work carried out by the painter in this space are this pair of canvases with an allegorical theme that stand out for their loose, sketchy brushwork and their rich and vivid chromaticism. The first corresponds to the one that decorates the music room, featuring some of the family's favorite composers such as Verdi, Chopin, Rossini, Beethoven, Mozart, or Liszt. The second, executed for the comedy cabinet, includes poets, novelists and playwrights from different periods, led by Lope de Vega. Measurements: 56 x 47 cm. each

EUGENIO LUCAS VILLAAMIL (Madrid, 1858-1919). "Procession". Oil on cardboard. Signed in the lower right corner. Measurements: 23 x 12 cm; 35 x 23 cm (frame). Eugenio Lucas Villaamil was a Spanish painter, Knight of the Order of Carlos III. Son of the painter Eugenio Lucas Velázquez and Francisca Villaamil, he began his artistic training in his father's workshop and continued his studies at the Special School of Painting in Madrid. He participated in the National Exhibitions of Fine Arts with Italian works. His paintings maintain the influence of the characteristics of those of his father, with the repetition of Goyaesque themes, resolved with great compositional skill and joy of color. He also copied several themes of the Aragonese, as can be seen in his works Entrada a los toros, Sol of 1885 or Salida de los toros, lluvia of 1885, works set in that traditional Madrid, starring majas and chisperos, of great picturesqueness and popular flavor. In this thematic line, his work En el palco (In the Box) stands out, in which he brings together different resources tested by his father in some of his canvases. In addition to the bullfighting themes, numerous paintings of "Casacones" such as Baile en palacio of 1894 or El mago en palacio of 1894, in which he represents ornate palace environments in rococo style. He was a skilled copyist of some of Goya's paintings, those kept in the Prado, and was protected by the well-known collector José Lázaro Galdiano. He had a truly versatile style and was indisputably creative. He also executed portraits, such as the children's group of the García de Palencia brothers. The taste for urban prints, both of high and low society, is a constant in his work, as can be seen in Llegada al teatro en una noche de baile de mascaras (Arrival at the theater on a night of masked ball), from 1895. Villaamil is currently represented in the best national and international art galleries, including the Prado Museum, the National Gallery in Washington D. C., the Lázaro Galdiano and Mapfre foundations in Madrid, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Havana, Badajoz and Alava, the J. Paul Getty Museum in California, the San Telmo Museum in San Sebastián, the Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza collection and the Camón Aznar Museum.

EUGENIO LUCAS VILLAAMIL (Madrid, 1858-1919). "Costumbrista Scene". Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower right corner. Size: 60 x 80 cm; 84 x 103 cm (frame). He took part in the National Exhibitions of Fine Arts with Italian works. His paintings maintain the influence of his father's characteristics, with the repetition of Goyaesque themes, resolved with great compositional skill and joy of colour. He also copied various themes from the Aragonese painter, as can be seen in his works Entrada a los toros, Sol ("Entrance to the Bulls, Sun", 1885) and Salida de los toros, lluvia ("Exit from the Bulls, Rain", 1885), works set in a traditional Madrid, featuring majas and chisperos, of great picturesqueness and popular flavour. His work En el palco ("In the Box"), in which he brings together various devices tried out by his father in some of his canvases, stands out in this thematic line. In addition to the bullfighting themes, there are numerous paintings by "Casacones" such as Baile en palacio ("Dancing in the Palace") of 1894 and El mago en palacio ("The Magician in the Palace") of 1894, in which he depicts ornate rococo-style palace settings. He was a skilled copyist of some of Goya's paintings, those kept in the Prado, and was protected by the well-known collector José Lázaro Galdiano. He had a truly versatile style and was unquestionably creative. He also executed portraits, such as the children's group of the García de Palencia brothers. In addition to applying all his skill in the handling of light with its reflections and contrasts, he demonstrated his mastery in the treatment of masses of people in movement.
