MIQUEL VILLÀ I BASSOLS (Barcelona 1901-1988). "Landscape of Masnou". Oil on board. Signed and located on the back.

      Est: €800 - €1,000

MIQUEL VILLÀ I BASSOLS (Barcelona 1901-1988). "Landscape of Masnou". Oil on board. Signed and located on the back. Measurements: 28 x 38 cm; 40 x 50 cm (frame). The work presented here is a clear example of the particular and characteristic style of Miquel Villá. In it, the painter rigorously organizes the composition, clearly separating the foreground from the background. Thus, we find in the foreground the road, which emerges from the very edge of the painting, guiding our gaze towards the houses that occupy the background. However, despite this compositional exercise of classical character, the artist treats the work from a new plastic language. For this he uses a blurred brushstroke that provides a volumetric sensation and also does not delimit the spaces, but combines them with each other. Miquel Villà i Bassols was a Spanish painter, and one of the main representatives of Fauvism in Spain. At the age of 13 his father, a wine merchant, took him with him to Colombia (Bogota). There he attended the school of fine arts until 1918. In 1920 he discovers Paris, which will be his habitual residence until 1930. In Paris he attends the Colarossi Academy. From 1930 he resides mainly in Catalonia: Barcelona, Masnou, Puebla de Segur, and spends some time in Ibiza. In 1985 he was distinguished by the Generalitat de Catalunya with the Cross of Sant Jordi.

      Est: €600 - €700

MIGUEL VILLÀ BASSOLS (Barcelona, 1901 - Masnou, 1988). Untitled. Oil on canvas. It has an informative label on the back. The canvas has a visible tear on the front. Signed on the back. Measurements: 27 x 41 cm; 44 x 58 cm (frame). After finishing his formation in the School of Fine Arts of La Lonja of Barcelona, Villà initiates a long series of trips for Europe and America, in the course of which he realizes his first individual exhibition, in Bogota. Settling in Paris in 1922, he participates in the Salons d'Automne and the Salons des Indépendants. Back in Spain he settled in Masnou. He exhibited at the Sala Parés in 1929, and participated in the Spring Exhibitions of Barcelona in 1933, 1934 and 1935. In addition, he was one of the painters protected by Joan Merli. During the post-war period he organized individual exhibitions in the Syra Galleries in Barcelona (1949 and 1951), and participated in the Barcelona Exhibition of 1951. He was awarded in the First Hispano-American Biennial of Art, celebrated in Madrid in 1951, and participated in the Third (Barcelona, 1955). Chosen by D'Ors, he participated in some of the Salones de los Once in Madrid, where he also had several solo exhibitions. He also exhibited regularly at the Sala Parés in Barcelona, and in 1977 and 1985 two anthological exhibitions were dedicated to him. In 1985 he was awarded the Sant Jordi Cross by the Generalitat de Catalunya. His painting, of a sober constructivism focused on landscapes (usually Catalan or Ibizan), interiors and still lifes, is characterized by its great material density and its matte coloring. His style synthesizes the rigor and classicism of noucentisme with the realism of the 1917 generation. He is represented in the Basque Museum of Contemporary Art and in the Museum of the Abbey of Montserrat, as well as in important private collections. It has a tear in the canvas visible on the obverse.

The work presented here is a clear example of the particular and characteristic style of Miquel Villá. In it, the painter rigorously organizes the composition, clearly separating the foreground from the background. Thus, we find in the foreground a landscape of tall trees, which emerges from the very edge of the painting, allowing us to glimpse the white houses that occupy the background. For this he uses a blurred brushstroke that provides a volumetric sensation and also does not delimit the spaces, but combines them with each other. Yellows, blues and whites shine with their own light in this fauve painting by Miquel Villà. Miquel Villà i Bassols was a Spanish painter, and one of the main representatives of Fauvism in Spain. At the age of 13 his father, a wine merchant, took him with him to Colombia (Bogotá). There he attended the school of fine arts until 1918. In 1920 he discovers Paris, which will be his habitual residence until 1930. In Paris he attends the Colarossi Academy. He made friends with Jean Fautrier, Marcel Duchamp, Togores, Pancho Cossío and the sculptor Pablo Gargallo, who greatly influenced his artistic career. His main influences were Cezanne and, at the beginning of his artistic career, Maurice de Vlaminck. He was also greatly influenced by Rembrandt's last period. From 1930 onwards he lived mainly in Catalonia: Barcelona, Masnou, Puebla de Segur, and spent some periods in Ibiza. In 1985 he was awarded the Cross of Sant Jordi by the Generalitat de Catalunya.
