This poster was designed in 1931 by Hernando Gonzalo Villa (1881-1952) for Santa Fe Railway. The image shows a typical cowboy from a Dude Ranch in the Southwest talking with a woman. The woman clearly is not from around there, she is wearing modern clothing and complements. With Santa Fe everyone could travel to the Southwest and meet real cowboys. Santa Fe Railway was founded in 1859. The company helped settle the mid-west in the later part of the 19th Century by selling real estate and farm land sanctioned by Congress. They became the second transcontinental railway to exist and expanded further with north-south routes in California. Santa Fe had a robust freight business and expanded its transportation reach with a bussing system. The company was featured in a 1945 song, "On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe" sung by Judy Garland for the film "The Harvey Girls." In 1996, the railway merged with the Burlington Northern Railway to form the Burlington Northern & Santa Fe Railway. Hernando G. Villa was born in Los Angeles and studied art in School of Art & Design locally. Villa travelled to Europe to continue his studies and after moved back to Los Angeles where he opened his own studio. He created illustrations for many magazines and advertisement for Santa Fe for over 40 years. He designed for Santa Fe Railway the famous Chief emblem. Villa liked to work in oil, watercolor, pastel, and charcoal. His most frequent subjects were Native Americans, Mexican vaqueros, California missions, and coastal views. The "windy city" is highlighted on the globe behind the central figure. This poster was re-issued for the World's Fair again in 1934 bearing that year's date and slightly more text.

The title of the poster refers to meeting in the image between the Native American chief and one of Santa Fe trains, the Super Chief or The Chief. Both trains traveled Chicago to Los Angeles. The beautiful image shows the majestic Southwestern scenery and the juxtaposition between past and present. The Native American chief is riding a white horse, wearing the traditional feathered war bonnet and raising his spear to the passing train. Santa Fe Railway was founded in 1859. Hernando Gonzallo Villa (1881 - 1952) European City Scene Watercolor on Board. Depicting a bustling street scene with people and a horse drawn wagon. In the background is a beautiful architecturally designed church. Artist hand signed on the lower left corner. Born in Los Angeles, CA on Oct. 1, 1881, the son of Esiquia and Miguel de Villa. His parents came to Los Angeles from Baja California in 1846 when the area was still part of Mexico. Raised in an artistic milieu, his mother was an amateur singer and his father an artist with a studio on the Plaza. Villa studied locally under Louise Garden-MacLeod at the School of Art & Design in 1905, and later taught there after studying for one year in England and Germany. HERNANDO GONZALLO VILLA (1881-1952) "The Chief: Fastest Train to Chicago, Kansas City." Poster maquette, study for the Amtrak poster of the same title, circa 1945. Mixed media including gouache, tempera, and glaze, on board. 39 1/2x29 1/2 inches; 1000x750 mm; framed. Signed "Hernando G. Villa" lower left. The recto shows reworking in the text area. While this image displays the title text, the printed version of the poster read "The Chief is still Chief - fastest and only extra fare train to Southern California." It was not uncommon for artists to repaint the text on the original artwork to suit the client's various ad campaign materials. "The Chief" express train ran from Chicago to Los Angeles on the Santa Fe line. "Villa treated Native Americans with a respect that approached reverence and sought to dispel the stereotypical attitude that they all looked alike." Original Vintage Santa Fe Railway Poster - Dude Ranches by Hernando Villa 1949

This poster was designed in 1931 by Hernando Gonzalo Villa (1881-1952) for Santa Fe Railway. The image shows a typical cowboy from a Dude Ranch in the Southwest talking with a woman. The woman clearly is not from around there, she is wearing modern clothing and complements. With Santa Fe everyone could travel to the Southwest and meet real cowboys. Santa Fe Railway was founded in 1859. The company helped settle the mid-west in the later part of the 19th Century by selling real estate and farm land sanctioned by Congress. They became the second transcontinental railway to exist and expanded further with north-south routes in California. Santa Fe had a robust freight business and expanded its transportation reach with a bussing system. The company was featured in a 1945 song, "On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe" sung by Judy Garland for the film "The Harvey Girls." In 1996, the railway merged with the Burlington Northern Railway to form the Burlington Northern & Santa Fe Railway. Hernando G. Villa was born in Los Angeles and studied art in School of Art & Design locally. Villa travelled to Europe to continue his studies and after moved back to Los Angeles where he opened his own studio. He created illustrations for many magazines and advertisement for Santa Fe for over 40 years. He designed for Santa Fe Railway the famous Chief emblem. Villa liked to work in oil, watercolor, pastel, and charcoal. His most frequent subjects were Native Americans, Mexican vaqueros, California missions, and coastal views. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster has been archivally backed onto linen and is in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.
