Condition B: replaced losses, repaired tears, creases and abrasions in margins and along folds and seams; water stains in right margin. Three-sheets. At the turn of the century, the department store E. & A. Mele & Cie commissioned numerous artists to create luxurious advertisements such as this promoting the civility, gentility and aquirability of their products to the well-to-do of Naples. Malerba, Dudovich, Cappiello, and Aleardo Villa, are among the best known designers who created advertisements for the company, often using large formats and sumptuous colors to entice the outwardly-focused upper class into their storefronts. Villa's image differs from most of the more commonly-seen Mele posters in its horizontal format, but also in its advertising a "rich assortment" of clothes and dresses for children, rather than sophisticated adults. In 1899, Il Mattino ran an article called "Egli vi guarda" (He Looks at You) that wrote: "Know well that 'that man,' sitting quietly on a wooden bench, leaning against a wall... this handsome young man with one leg leaning on the other, black mustache, 'he' has the air of doing nothing, of seeing nothing, of giving himself good weather, waiting for I don't know who and I don't know what, perhaps letting himself live, certainly. Here it is the 'nocturnal' effect that attracts, together with the sensation of an exquisitely metropolitan crowd. The chiaroscuro is made essential and almost nonexistent; the evidence of the figures is entrusted to the luminous profiles against the light" (Mele, p. 212). Notice the painterly expressions of rain puddles shimmering in the city lights and Villa's incorporation of the Mele logo in the street lamps. This is a three-sheet poster—and rare! Ricordi, Milano DESCRIPTION: In the spring of 1900, a young Neapolitan lady might find these fashions at the Mele store: a dress in delicate cream and tan, a black velvet choker, white lacy gloves, and a straw hat adorned with flowers. Villa joined Ricordi in 1895, and contributed a number of designs for Meleone of the posterist's biggest clientsbetween roughly 1898 and 1905. Though unsigned, it is in keeping with his illustrative aesthetic, and is quite similar to another design he created for Mele in 1901 (see PAI-XIII, 51). (Art Nouveau; Fashion; Italian)
