Painter

Julio Vila y Prades (9 April 1873, Valencia - 9 July 1930, Barcelona) was a Spanish painter and muralist who also worked throughout Latin America.

Against his parents wishes, he began his artistic studies at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Carlos with Francisco Domingo Marqués and Joaquín Agrasot. He then went to Madrid and was an assistant in the workshop of Joaquín Sorolla from 1893 to 1904.[1]

He was a frequent participant at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts, where he took honorable mention in 1892 and 1897 and won a medal in 1904 for his painting, On Rice.[1] That same year, he went to Paris and spent a short time studying at the Académie Julian.

Expressing a desire to visit South America, his friend Sorolla contacted the Catalan businessman and art promoter, José Artal (1862-1918), who was based in Buenos Aires.[2] With his support, Vila went to Argentina, where he painted landscapes and genre scenes on the pampas. He returned to Europe in 1906, spending some time in Brittany, then visiting Madrid, where he made drawings at the wedding of King Alfonso XIII.

In 1908, following the death of his mother, he went back to Buenos Aires and married José (soon to be "Count") Artal's daughter, Carmen, who was fifteen years his junior. Over the next few years, he travelled throughout Argentina, receiving several commissions for decorative works, including the ceiling at the Tigre Club, and murals at the Plaza Hotel and the Tucumán Government Palace.[1] He also produced numerous portraits.

Plans to move to Paris were quashed by the beginning of World War I and his family settled in San Sebastián instead. He continued to travel, however, working in New York, Havana, Caracas and Mexico City.[2] He returned to Spain in 1921 and painted the ceiling of the new Gran Kursaal de San Sebastián (since demolished).[1] After that, he went to Peru, to do on-site sketches for a mural of the Battle of Ayacucho, to be placed in the new Bolivarian Museum in Caracas.[2] The year 1924 found him in San Francisco, painting a ceiling mural, The Apotheosis of the California Soldier, for the theater at the Legion of Honor museum.[3]:95

In 1928, he moved his workshop to Barcelona, so his wife could be closer to her family. That same year, the Peruvian government awarded him the Order of the Sun, although the mural that had been commissioned would remain unfinished at his death, two years later.

JULIO VILA PRADES (Valencia, 1873 - Barcelona, 1930). "Young man with a lantern". Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower right corner. It presents a restoration, visible on the back. Measurements: 100 x 80 cm; We see in this canvas a work different from the most usual production of Vila Prades, although perfectly framed in his costumbrista aesthetics, centred on the human figure. However, we do not find his Mediterranean luminosity, as it is a nocturnal scene which becomes a demonstration of technical mastery of the work with light. The light is radiated by the coloured lantern held by the young woman, a lantern of oriental inspiration typical of the period. The girl, on the other hand, represents the painter's feminine ideal: a girl with rounded features and a friendly expression, looking directly at the viewer, dressed in typically Spanish clothes, adorned with floral motifs that seem to be reflected in the central band of the lantern. Also noteworthy is the setting in which the figure is located, an indeterminate setting, possibly a garden, flooded with lush plants that add vibrancy to the background and flood the stage on the right side, enhancing the decorative sense of the composition. Julio Vila Prades trained at the San Carlos School of Fine Arts in Valencia, where his teachers were Joaquín Agrasot, Juan Peyró and Francisco Domingo Marqués. After completing his studies he moved to Madrid, where he attended Joaquín Sorolla's studio between 1893 and 1904. This image of candour is reinforced by the presence of the protagonist who raises her arms, as if trying to reach something, or to cover herself with respect to the sunlight that bathes her marble skin. The piece seems to be a sketch, as the artist simply marks the legs with a quick stroke, while he focuses his attention on the torso of the protagonist and especially on the light effects produced on the young woman's skin. JULIO VILA Y PRADES (Valencia, 1873 - Barcelona, 1930). "Portrait of a lady. Oil on canvas. It has a label on the back from the Galería Jorge Juan (Madrid). It has repainting and restorations. Measurements: 140 x 74 cm; 151 x 86 cm (frame). A neutral background focuses the attention of the spectator on the figure, while the colouring animates the face framed by the dark hair of the young woman, dressed with a white shawl embroidered with red flowers and a red dress whose flounces in the lower area infuse dynamism to the figure. The woman stands with a haughty gesture and a certain grace reflected in the mischievous expression on her face. This type of work was very common and appreciated in Spanish art from the 19th century until well into the 20th century. In which the creation of popular patterns portrayed through an idyllic vision where the author is influenced by a romantic aesthetic and heritage, developed during the second half of the 19th century and which derived in a localist conception of the landscape, in works that reflected the love for one's own land and the beauty and lyricism of the everyday, the close and the familiar. He regularly took part in the National Exhibitions of Fine Arts in the capital, winning honourable mentions in 1892 and 1897 and a second medal in 1904. The son-in-law of José Artal, the great promoter of Spanish painting in Buenos Aires, he travelled to Argentina in 1904. From there he visited various Latin American countries, where he received commissions for decorative painting such as the ceilings for the Tigery Club in Buenos Aires, the government palace in Tucumán and the Mar de Plata Club. During these years he also painted numerous portraits of personalities of the time. On his return to Spain in 1921, he decorated the ceiling of the Gran Kursaal in San Sebastián. He also worked as an illustrator and poster designer, particularly for Anís Fígaro, the Valencia July Fair (1900 and 1906). Julio Vila Prades is currently represented in the Prado Museum, the Fine Arts Museum of Huelva, the National Fine Arts Museums of Buenos Aires and Havana, the Municipal de Arte Tigre in Buenos Aires, the Historical and Military Museum of Chile, Valencia City Hall and the San Telmo Museum in San Sebastian, among others.
