Artist: EMILIO VILÁ (1887-1967) Size: 33 3/4 x 48 1/2 in./85.7 x 123.2 cm Joseph Charles, Paris Emilio Vilá is an enigma: the scant biographical details we have for him don't make sense, and the most we're able to parse is that he was born in a small Spanish town, studied in Barcelona and eventually made his way to Paris. It's clear, however, that his art is absolutely first-rate: a fusion of Modernist naturalism and Dutch-Spanish Mannerism. While in a pose of guarded ennui, this beautiful young woman's eyes look up to the smoky brand-name of Batschari with the kind of beatific gaze that a nun, venerating a saint, might possess.
