    Est: €1,200 - €1,300

MASSIMO & LELLA VIGNELLI (Milan, 1931-2014) for Bernini. Armchair "Incontro 5080". Wooden structure and leather upholstery. With casters. In very good condition. Measurements: 95 x 60 x 60 cm. Armchair designed by the couple Lella and Massimo Vignelli in the nineties. The formal refinement and the geometric reduction of the volumes was a constant search of Vignelli, that in the model Incontro reached high quotas of aestheticism. The synthesis between classicism and modernity gives the piece a timeless and eternal patina, accentuated by the use of curved walnut slats and black leather. Massimo Vignelli and his wife Lella were an important and famed Italian graphic and industrial design tandem. Massimo attended a school in Brera, before earning his degree in architecture at the University of Milan. During 1953 and 1957, he also attended the School of Architecture at the University of Venice. At the beginning of his professional career, his area of specialization would be graphic design for the creation of products and corporate identities. In the late 1950s, he obtained a scholarship to study in the United States, specifically at Towle Silversmiths, Massachusetts and the Chicago Institute of Design. He created his own firm, Vignelli Associates, together with his wife. He based his work on modernism and simplicity, which is manifested through his taste for the use of geometric design.

Massimo Vignelli for Venini Table Lamp, Murano

    Est: $500 - $750

Artist/Designer; Manufacturer: Massimo Vignelli (Italian, 1931-2014); Venini (Italy) Marking(s); notes: no marking(s) apparent Materials: glass Dimensions (H, W, D): 7.5"h, 5.5"dia Additional Information: The lamp is model number 4040. Reference (pictured): Italian Glass Century 20, Leslie Pina, pg. 234. Provenance: Collection of Leslie & Ramon Pina, Beachwood, Ohio.   Leslie Pina has authored over fifty books on 20th-century design, each focused on a specific area she and her husband Ramon personally collected and studied. Her obsession with color and design began early in life. She followed in her mother’s footsteps to attend the Cleveland Institute of Art on a scholarship, the start of an “endless academic career” and the ideal outlet for her drive to collect, study, and write.   While in graduate school Leslie went to Puerto Vallarta and met her future husband Ramon. They shared a passion for beauty in nature and in art. “We learned and wrote about many topics: Italian, Scandinavian, and American glass, Art Deco designs, Mexican silver, Herman Miller furniture, and so on. We traveled around the United States to photograph private and museum collections. That said, Murano glass was and still is our favorite.” The selection of Murano glass offered in this auction was amassed over 30-40 years, most collected prior to the mid-1990s, and reflects the contents of four of Leslie Pina’s books. Palm Beach Modern Auctions would like to thank Ms. Pina for sharing her personal stories about her time as an educator, writer, and collector, and her love of beautiful objects. More details from our interview can be found in the listing photos.
