Jehan Georges Vibert Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1840 - d. 1902

(b Paris, 1840; d Paris, 1902) French Painter. A native of Paris, Vibert first studied with his maternal grandfather, the engraver Jean-Pierre- Marie Jazet. He entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1857 at the age of sixteen and by 1864 had already won a medal at the Salon . A multi-talented figure, Vibert was also a published author, writing for Century Magazine as well as plays for the Palais Royale, Variétés and the Vaudeville. In 1866, the young Vibert exhibited at the Salon a work done in collaboration with the Spanish-born artist Edouardo Zamacois, Entrance of the Toreadors . Vibert had met the Spanish artist in 1860 and perhaps under his influence traveled several times to Spain. From that point on the artist became a genre painter. He became a master of the small-scale amusing anecdotal scenes, which had wide appeal among the sophisticated art patrons of Paris. In addition to his art, Vibert had a long and active association with the stage and all aspects of theatrical life in Paris. The influence of the theatre upon his painting is evident throughout his oeuvre, and the narrative is always essential to the artistic. • Jean-George Vibert Satirical Clergy Painting
    Jan. 29, 2025

    Jean-George Vibert Satirical Clergy Painting

    Est: $3,000 - $6,000

Jean-George Vibert (French, 1840-1902). Oil on board painting depicting a satirical scene of a cardinal feeding pigeons in a courtyard. Signed along the lower right. Lot Essay: Jehan (Jean) Geroges Vibert was born in Paris to a family of significant artistic and scientific heritage. His maternal grandfather was a renowned engraver and his paternal grandfather was a prolific rose-breeder and botanist. Vibert, though a mediocre student, always knew he was destined to be an artist. At the Ecole des Beaux-Arts he honed his skills under the tutelage of several prominent teachers including Felix-Joseph Barrias and Francois-Edouard Picot. Eventually, his genre scenes featuring members of the clergy engaging in somewhat playful or lighthearted debauchery gained some notice, earning him acclaim for these satirical depictions. At this time in history, contempt for clergy members had risen to such a level that these depictions were deemed acceptable to the public. They were often shown as mockingly decadent, painted lazily sitting in chairs, playing games and music, and other activities that were a far cry from the religious life they espoused. The present painting depicts one such member of the clergy turning away from his duties - the men at the table who are trying to capture his attention - and instead turning away to feed the doves which approach.

In it a choir of eight monks are rehearsed by a cantankerous Monseigneur in his palatial surroundings. Enthroned on a richly brocaded armchair the prelate clutches his violin as he strains forward in his seat, using his bow to conduct. Accompanying the singers are a double-bass player and a young and earnest pianist, both attired in distinctive red ecclesiastical robes. With mouths open-wide, and eyes fixed intently on their music, the choir seem to be literally singing for their lives. Woe betide the poor chorister who sings a wrong note, or misses the beat. See introduction to lot 358.

Jehan Georges Vibert (French, 1840 - 1902) During his long and prolific career, Vibert was recognized as one of France's most accomplished academic painters. His sense of drama permitted him to write plays and poke fun at Bishops, Archbishops, and Cardinals of the Catholic Church in France enjoying the good life of the second half of the nineteenth century. Vibert debuted his work at the Salon of 1863 and continued to submit to these important exhibitions until 1899. As the popularity of his work spread, notably in America, he obtained high prices including commissions from important collectors like John Jacob Astor IV and W. H. Vanderbilt.
