Viaux Stamped on the back of the mounting card "Me S. Machoir Vente G. L. Viaux Semur-en-Auxois". During his career, naval officer Louis-Gabriel Viaux witnessed the history of the French Navy at the crossroads of two centuries: colonial expansion, the Franco-Russian alliance and, finally, the First World War. A solitary artist, Commander Viaux carried out two campaigns on the training cruiser Iphigénie, one of the Navy's last sailing ships. A watercolorist, he adopted glass plate photography, taking over a thousand snapshots. Most of his work has been deposited in the archives of the French Navy, making up an extraordinary body of documentation.
