Vicenç Viaplana's work focuses on making the ethereal, the immaterial visible, for which he masterfully captures the effects of light and gives form to vaporous shadows. Each of his works is a new exploration that accumulates experience and sensitivity, and opens up questions about the certainty of our perceptions. His distortion of reality, the concealment of objects and the blurring of images provoke multiple messages that wander between abstraction and figuration. Viaplana made his solo debut in 1975, at the Ciento gallery in Barcelona, and since then he has held personal exhibitions in that city as well as in Madrid, Ibiza, New York, Kyoto, Groningen, Tokyo, Basiela, etc. He has also taken part in outstanding group exhibitions all over the world, including the "G Gallery" Teatru Studio in Warsaw (1977), Armory in New York (1990), Runkel Hue Williams in London (1993), Reflex in Amsterdam (1993), the Royal Ueno Museum in Tokyo (1995), the Reinickendorf Hall in Berlin (1996), the Cervantes Institute in Munich (1996) and the Pelaires Hall in Palma (2003), among many other galleries and art centres all over the world. Since 1978 he has combined painting with design, having worked for prominent clients such as the restaurant "El Bulli", the Maritime Museum of Barcelona, the MACBA shop-bookshop, the Centro Insular de Cultura of Las Palmas, the Diputación de Barcelona, etc. He has also designed the "Pisa" bookshelf, the "Tanatona" lamp and the "Oa" tables for the firm Tresce. He is currently represented in the Museum of Granollers, the Vilacasas and Soriguè Foundations, and the Fundació La Caixa, Ernesto Ventós Omedes, Josep Mª Civit, Tous-de Pedro, Runkel Hue Williams, Prudential Securities, Vreg Baghomian and Aaron B. Kratz collections.

VICENÇ VIAPLANA I MULA (Granollers, 1955) "Totores". Etching, aquatint and carborundum on handmade paper. Copy 16/75. Signed and justified. Size: 70 x 100 cm (x2). He began his artistic career as part of the creative environment of the first manifestations of conceptual art in Catalonia in the 1970s, which the art critic Alexandre Cirici Pellicer called the Meridian of Granollers. At that time he exhibited alongside artists such as Carlos Pazos, Fina Miralles, Jordi Benito, Jordi Pablo and Ferran Garcia Sevilla. He also took part in various actions such as the performance Publica in Granollers, with Xavier Vilageliu and Magda González. His knowledge of American action painting represented a turning point in his career, which led him to gestural painting. Although he began within the parameters of conceptual art with gestural painting, later his painting represented rural and natural landscapes which, although formally abstract, had an important figurative essence. Later, he was enriched by his knowledge of light, establishing a dialogue between light and darkness. On the other hand, in his works he often makes references to reality that coexist with personal elements and reflect his interest in the dream world. Vicenç Viaplana's work is housed in the Vila Casas Foundation, the La Caixa Foundation, the Raset Museum in Cervià de Ter and the Sabadell Art Museum, among others.
