From Cooleygallery.com: Charles Vezin (1858-1942) was born in Philadelphia and spent the earlier part of his life traveling and studying between Pennsylvania and Berlin, Germany, where his grandparents lived. Vezin finished his education studying engineering in Freiburg, Germany but returned to the United States with a passion for commerce. He began as a traveling salesman before partnering in 1895 with Ralph P. Hinchman and J. W. White to found Hinchman, Vezin & Company in New York. Descended from a long line of musicians and performers, Vezin had the disposition of an artist. He chose painting as a salvation from his unfulfilling job, and he undertook his artistic education with as much fervor as he had previously applied to his business. Vezin enrolled at the Art Students League in the latter part of the 1890s, where he studied with William Merritt Chase (1849-1916) and Frank Vincent DuMond (1865-1951). He connected best with DuMond and followed him to Old Lyme in 1900, the first year artists from New York visited the region in significant numbers. Like so many of the artists in residence at the Florence Griswold mansion, Vezin found himself captivated by the landscape of Lyme and Old Lyme, and purchased for himself and his wife a large stretch of farmland on Grassy Hill near where DuMond and his wife, the artist Helen Savier DuMond (1872-1968), also maintained a home. As Vezin?s talents and reputation increased, he followed DuMond up through the ranks at the Art Students League, ultimately serving as league president in 1911. Prominent roles and exhibitions followed, including the presidency of the Salmagundi Club in 1914 and numerous showings at the National Academy of Design, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Century Club, the Salmagundi Club, and more (1). Vezin essentially painted three types of pictures ? bright, nearly pastel scenes of the Manhattan skyline and harbor, warm winter scenes of the Hudson River with the Palisades almost always illuminated by reflected pink sunlight, and more deeply colored and vernal views of Old Lyme. During his career, he was most celebrated for his Manhattan and Brooklyn waterfront paintings, such as New York Skyline. ?Mr. Vezin is a trenchant upholder of the beautiful in art and a sworn enemy of all that smacks of decadence,? wrote one critic at the New York Herald, in reference to his modernist competitors. ?He paints the environs of this city and the Hudson by preference,? said another at The New York Mail and Express, ??Mr. Vezin has approached it with a seeing and reverent eye.? A different writer at the American Art News added: ?His work is characterized by much tenderness and poetry? (2). Vezin balanced work and art, rising at four-thirty in the morning to paint until nine, confining himself to the office from nine until five in the afternoon, then painting again until dark. He kept to this schedule religiously until his retirement in 1919 at age sixty-one, after which he painted full-time for upwards of another two decades. Paintings such as New York Skyline were done in the morning in order to capture ?the opalescent quality of Manhattan seen at 5am.? As described once by Vezin Askart.com: The following biography is based on material provided by Ada Holmes Doty, grand daughter of the artist. Born in Philadelphia, Charles Vezin became a painter associated with scenes of Brooklyn Harbor and the downtown skyline. He did not gain attention as a painter until he was in his forties when he began studying in New York with Frank DuMond at the Art Students League. As a young man, he was educated in the Philadelphia area at the Pennsylvania Military Academy, the Dr. Faires School and also studied in Germany. Returning to the United States, he became a traveling salesman, and in 1895 founded the drygoods firm of Hinchman, Veste & Co. By age sixty one, he gave up a lucrative drygoods business to devote himself to art, a decision about which he commented: "I shook off the shackles of business to become a free man with nothing to consider but the joy of work." From 1911 to 1915, he served as president of the Salmagundi Club in New York, and he, who had his first art lesson at age 41, saw his paintings exhibited widely including at the National Academy of Design, the Carnegie Institute, the Corcoran Gallery, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He wrote numerous brochures on art subjects and was especially vocal in his disapproval of the Metropolitan Museum of Art exhibiting impressionist-style paintings. For many years, he and his wife, Adah DeLamater, lived in Old Lyme, Connecticut, and made his home in Coral Gables, Florida.
