NIEDERLÄNDISCHES STÄDTCHEN MIT HÄNDLERN Öl auf Holz. 27 x 35 cm. Rechts am unteren Rand signiert. Blick auf eine einfache Straße, die rechts und links von Backsteinhäusern flankiert ist. Auf diesem Weg befinden sich mehrere Passanten, darunter einige Frauen, die Kisten auf ihren Köpfen tragen und sich anscheinend auf dem Weg zum, oder vom Markt bewegen. Rechts und links des Straßenrandes sitzen auf Grünflächen einige Frauen. Im Hintergrund ragt eine gotische Kirche in den sonnigen, von Wolken gesäumten blauen Himmel. Winter in Town (1886) Signed and dated 86 lower right Oil on canvas, 44.9 x 34.6 cm Provenance: Private collection, the Netherlands Note: Petrus Gerardus Vertin was a nineteenth century etcher, lithographer, painter and watercolourist and part of the movement of the The Hague Romanticists. From 1839 up to 1840 he was trained at the Haagse Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten by B.J. van Hove who also taught Jan Hendrik Weissenbruch and Charles Leickert. Vertin is known for his landscapes and cityscapes, but also painted portraits and church interiors. In his winter landscapes Vertin exhibits a great eye for detail, for example the light reflecting from the snow on the roofs and streets lends a nearly magical atmosphere to his works. * Condition report available upon request

From 1839 to 1840 he was trained at the Hague Academy of Art by B.J. van Hove who also taught Jan Hendrik Weissenbruch and Charles Leickert. Vertin is known for his landscapes and cityscapes, but also painted portraits and church interiors. His cityscapes of, among others, Alkmaar and Delft are very accurate, but he also often painted fantasised elements of various cities and combined various cities and landscapes. His paintings are on display in the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague and the Centraal Museum Utrecht.

Petrus Gerardus Vertin (1819 - 1893) Watercolor on paper, Signed Lower Left, Measures (5.5 x 6.5 inches) w/frame (11 x 12.5 inches) Petrus Gerardus Vertin (1819-1893) was a Dutch painter and graphic artist of the 19th century living in The Hague and focusing on Dutch townscapes and streets. His works are saved in several Dutch museums among others in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, in the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague as well as in the Centraal Museum in Utrecht. Vertin was a scholar of the well-known veduta* painter Bartholomeus Johannes van Hove and for his printed graphic works he chose lithography* and etching. As a painter of Dutch townscapes, he focused on streets, town squares, bridges and canals at different times of the year and presenting different weather situations. His favorite motif shows the following elements: aligning house facades with a street or a canal, a prominent building in the background such as a church, an atmospheric heaven including moving clouds and small men giving kind of narrative character to the paintings.

Petrus Gerardus Vertin (1819 - 1893) Canal in Utrecht With View of Domtoren in the Distance Oil on Panel. Pierter Vertin achieved notoriety during his lifetime as an artist depicting the mannered and sedate small towns throughout The Netherlands and Flanders. Critics of the artist praised him for his meticulous attention to small details and his use of warm pleasing color. Vertin works can be found in museums in Amsterdam, The Hague, Brussels and Utrecht. Patterson, London, probably 1960's or 1970's - Private collection, the Netherlands Note: Petrus Gerardus Vertin was a nineteenth century etcher, lithographer, painter and watercolourist and part of the movement of the The Hague Romanticists. From 1839 up to 1840 he was trained at the Hague Academy of Art by BJ van Hove who also taught Jan Hendrik Weissenbruch and Charles Leickert. Vertin is known for his landscapes and cityscapes, but also painted portraits and church interiors. His cityscapes of, amongst others, Alkmaar and Delft are very accurate, but he also often painted fantasized elements of various cities and combined various cities and landscapes. His paintings are on display in the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague and the Centraal Museum Utrecht. * Please note: condition reports and additional photos are available upon request.
