He won two Academy Awards (Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design) for his work on the 1952 film Moulin Rouge. Vertes is also responsible for the original murals in the Cafe Carlyle in the Carlyle Hotel in New York City, New York and for those in the Peacock Alley in the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York. Printed in 1953 on colored laid paper for Improvisations published by the Artists Equity Association in an edition of 2000.  This portfolio consisted of advertisements for local New York City businesses supporting Artists Equity, and each advertisement was an original lithograph. About 12 x 8-3/4 in. Signed in the plate; not hand-signed.

    Marcel VERTES (Hungarian-French, 1895-1961): Four plates from "Le Cirque". Drypoint and aquatint, made to look like selective wiping, printed in black only on Arches wove paper, circa 1928. In the loose-leafed book these were printed in color mostly. A few deluxe sets contained additional suites of the intaglio prints in black only, as ours. Three of the four main compositions are flanked with amusing remarques. Sheet sizes (each): 12 1/2 x 17 3/4 inches.

Biography from the Archives of askART: An Academy Award winning costume designer for Moulin Rouge, easel and mural painter, illustrator and scenic artist, Marcel Vertes was born in Hungary. His most active years professionally were 1933 to 1952, and he lived in both New York City and Paris, France. In Paris, he was a student at the Academy Julian. Note: Hungarian-born Marcel Vertès was a French costume designer and illustrator who won two Academy Awards for Best Art Direction and Best Costume Designer for his work on the 1952 film Moulin Rouge which starred Zsa Zsa Gabor. He studied art at the Academie Julian in Paris and fully immersed himself in the Parisian art scene. Vertès is also famous for painting the legendary murals in the Café Carlyle in the Carlyle Hotel and in the Peacock Alley in the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York.
