Lively Amsterdam street scene with figures, horses and tram, signed 'Ch Verschuuren Jr.' (lower right), oil on canvas, unframed, 57x76 cm, Provenance:-Artist's collection, thence by descent to the present owner, Painted around 1920.Charles Verschuuren (Tilburg, June 16, 1891 – New York, October 8, 1955) was a Dutch painter and illustrator. In 1915, he married revue dancer Antonia Kemming in Amsterdam. He studied at the Royal Academy of Arts in Amsterdam and spent 1913-1914 in Paris. Afterwards, he worked for several years at the Kotting printing press in Amsterdam, where he created more than a hundred posters in seven years, including both advertising and theater posters.In 1922, Charles moved with his family to Cleveland, Ohio, in the United States, and in 1923 to New York, where he joined the staff of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle newspaper. He designed covers for the Sunday magazine, the first of which dates back to June 29, 1924. After the Depression years, he also painted murals for various restaurants and nightclubs in New York. His freelance career came to an end with the outbreak of World War II, when Verschuuren enlisted as an illustrator in the U.S. Army. After the war, he briefly worked at Walt Disney Studios, contributing to the animated film Seeds of Destiny, which won an Oscar in 1946, but he eventually returned to his previous work.In addition to his illustration work - several of his posters are preserved in the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the Theater Instituut Nederland - Charles Verschuuren left behind a small body of oil paintings, including the lively Amsterdam cityscape currently being auctioned.

(1899-1955) SIZE: 30 3/4 x 84 in./78.2 x 213.3 cm PRINTER: Drukkerij Kotting, Amsterdam DESCRIPTION: This two-sheet dandy literally thrusts the attributes of street advertising into the minds of the public, almost daring them to ignore the preenings of this foppish homunculus as he inspects Kotting’s kiosked craftsmanship with the assistance of a magnifying glass. Little known in America, this talented Dutch graphic artist began his career at 16 as a cartoonist in his native Tilburg before going off for formal training at the fine arts academies of Amsterdam and Paris. He returned home in 1914, finding work with the prominent Amsterdam printing firm of Kotting. In 1923, Verschuuren moved his family to the United States, widely exhibiting his oil paintings, yet never willing to sell any of them. He soon became a successful cover artist for the Brooklyn Daily Eagle. However, when the depression forced the paper to shut its doors in 1936, Verschuuren became a freelance artist, creating murals for the WPA and continuing to exhibit. From 1941 until his passing, he worked as a filmstrip artist for the U.S. Air Force and the Army Signal Corp. (Art Deco; Posters on Posters)
