Lieve Pietersz. Verschuier,  Dutch c.1630-1686-  Sailing barges off the coast with figures standing

      Est: £1,500 - £2,500

Lieve Pietersz. Verschuier,  Dutch c.1630-1686-  Sailing barges off the coast with figures standing on the shore;  oil on panel, 42.8 x 55.6 cm.  Provenance:  with Hal O'Nians Gallery, London, where purchased in 1973.  Private Collection.  Note:  Verschuier was a Rotterdam-born painter who was recorded as being in Amsterdam in 1651, where is it believed that he may have studied under the marine painter Simon de Vlieger (c.1601-1653). He travelled to Rome in 1653, where he befriended artists such as Willem Drost (1633-1659) and Johann Carl Loth (1632-1698), before returning to the Netherlands, settling in Rotterdam in 1667. The sense of calm that pervades the present composition, which features boats bobbing gently on placid waters, stands in striking contrast with the tumultuous naval battle scenes which make up much of Verschuier's output, such as the examples held in the collection of the Royal Maritime Museum [BHC1675, BHC0849, and BHC0288].

VERSCHUIER ROTTERDAM CIRCA 1630 - 1686 AN EVENING COASTAL SCENE WITH SAILORS UNLOADING THEIR CARGO, A MAN-O-WAR FIRING A SALUTE IN THE DISTANCE measurements note 37.5 by 49.4 cm.; 14 3/4 by 19 1/2 in. signed lower right: L. verschuier oil on oak panel PROVENANCE Anonymous sale, London, Sotheby's, 22 May 1963, lot 80 (to Hale); Anonymous sale, London, Sotheby's, 20 October 1982, lot 70, when bought by the Herwegs. NOTE Although they formed only part of his oeuvre, Verschuier is certainly best known for his highly atmospheric marines which, as here, are usually set before dramatic sunsets, depicted with unusual effects of light. He was in this regard a startlingly original artist, with no obvious precursors nor followers. Only one dated picture, of 1661, is known (Munich, Alte Pinakothek), but by comparison with it a picture similar to the present one, in Paris, Fondation Custodia, has been dated to circa 1660 (see G.S. Keyes, Mirror of Empire, exhibition catalogue, Minneapolis 1990, pp. 180-3, reproduced p. 181), and the Herweg picture must also date from the same period of the artist's life.

      Lieve Pietersz. Verschuier

      Est: £7,000 - £10,000

Lieve Pietersz. Verschuier Rotterdam circa 1630 - 1686 a beach scene with fishermen preparing their boats at sunset oil on canvas 61.4 by 76 cm.; 24 1/4 by 30 in. Verschuier is believed to have worked with Simon de Vlieger in Amsterdam before 1652, whose influence is clearly visible in the present work. This painting characteristically displays Verschuier's interest in the depiction of weather conditions, in particular the rendering of dramatic sunsets. For comparison, see a similar painting sold London, Phillip's, 2 December 1997, lot 135. Provenance: With Alan Jacobs Gallery, London, from whom acquired by the present owner in 1983. Exhibited: Newcastle, Dutch Landscape Painting, 12 Oct. - 3 Dec. 1983.
