ÉMILE ANTOINE VERPILLEUX, M.B.E. (1888-1964) THE ENTRANCE TO THE BRITISH MUSEUM signed & dated in pencil l.r. E Verpilleux 1914 woodcut Image 45.8 x 35.6cm / 18 x 14in Verpilleux, an Anglo-Belgian, was the first artist to have a coloured woodcut print hang in the Royal Academy. He began his studies at the Regent Street Polytechnic, later moving to the Antwerp Académie des Beaux Arts. Upon his return to England, he worked as an occasional illustrator for magazines. His work became better known following Joseph Pennell's support, leading to Verpilleux's work being shown at the International Society Exhibition, the New English Art Club and the Royal Academy. Colnaghi & Co. acquired a number of his prints (one was given by P. & D. Colnaghi to the Victoria and Albert collection), and James Bolivar Manson - later director of the Tate - praised Verpilleux's talents in the September 1913 issue of The Studio. Following the War, Verpilleux was presented with the M.B.E. for his bravery. Verpilleux moved to Bermuda permanently in 1937, following a number of visits there previously. Here he painted more than 150 portraits, a 100 ft. long frieze (now in St George's Town Hall, Bermuda) and a number of landscapes and other works. He founded what is now the Bermuda Society of Arts in 1952 and continued to exhibit right up to the end of his life. unframed
