Condition report: No noticeable damages to these modern pieces. Expected wear and scuffs.

*JOHN VERNEY (1913-1993), *JOHN VERNEY (1913-1993), 'The Three Graces', a painted tripod table, by John Verney (1913-1993), the circular top painted with 'The Three Graces' as three nude ladies wearing boaters, standing on a bowling green, a vicar seated on a wall, with a floral border, the base in green, 50cm diameter 66.5cm high John Verney (1913-1993) was a painter, illustrator and writer, born in London. His paintings and work are often of the amusing, mock-naïve type. Verney illustrated a number of books, including a series by Gillian Avery and Anthony Buckeridge, and wrote his own, including the entertaining 'Going to the Wars', 1955. He lived originally in Farnham, Surrey, where he founded the Farnham Trust, to preserve buildings, latterly living in Clare, Suffolk. There was a memorial show at Gainsboroughs House, Sudbury, 19945. Farnham Museum holds the original painting 'The Three Graces'. *Artist's Resale Right may apply to this lot.

John Verney, painter and illustrator, film director's assistant and baronet, Yeomanry officer and parachutist, traveller and lover of most things British, especially Farnham, Surrey, was also wonderful company to his many friends, master of the ludicrous, inventor of the 'Dodo-Pad' and author of one of the best memoirs of the Second World War, "Going to the Wars". In later life he lived at Clare in Suffolk - where visitors came for Sunday lunch and he painted in a converted stable-loft - Sir John loved painting on unusual surfaces, and his tabletop "Rape of the Sabines" memorably encapsulates his characteristic irony.
