Over 300 illustrations by a variety of Art Nouveau artists, including Alphonse Mucha, Mathurin Meheut, Charles Barberis, and photographer Pierre Plauszewski. Wear to portfolios, light spotting.M.P. Verneuil was an artist and designer who bridged the gap between the Art Nouveau and Art Deco movements in France. He was associated with numerous Art Nouveau illustrators and artists, and assembled collaborative works for publication, such as the Encylopedie included here. The photographer Plauszewski was one of those associated artists, known primarily for his photographs collected in the second work.

Standing on dark blue lily pads, a lovely woman with flowing orange hair is pouring water from a gray jug. The essence of nature, purity and freshness in this ad for a disinfectant is ubiquitous; from the gorgeous white flowers in the background, to the green floral patterns on the maiden's dress, to the Art Nouveau style of design, so long associated with the decorative representation of the natural world. "The image is laden with ornamental swirls and stylized plant images that fill the picture. The design is also remarkable because of the monumental quality that its strongly vertical design accentuates" (Health p. 154). Verneuil was a student of Grasset's who is best remembered for his monumental work L'Etude de la Plante a book of floral ornamentation that is a key document on French Art Nouveau. His posters are scarce, but here he shows his own excellence as a master of Art Nouveau graphics. Health 197.

Covers separated along spine with losses and chipping at edges. By the late 1890s Eugene Grasset had two studios in Paris. In addition to his own design studio he also operated a studio where his senior students worked on projects like this one, under his supervision. This portfolio was a key element of the propagation of the Art Nouveau Style in France and in continental Europe. Each student was assigned a specific approach. M. P. (Maurice Pillard) Verneuil (1869-1942), the most obviously talented, designed highly detailed plates of each plant seen from every angle. (Later, once on his own, Verneuil designed L'Animal dans la Decoration, 1897, which he dedicated to Grasset.) The other plates give examples of the use of the same plant to designs for wallpaper, textile, glass, silver, furniture, etc. They bear the signatures of lesser-known artists, such as Milisi, Hervegh, Poidevin, and two young ladies Marcelle Gaudin and Anna Martin. Beautifully printed and stencil colored, this work stands with Alphonse Mucha's Documents Decoratifs as one of the key manuals of the Art Nouveau movement.
