Sight Size: 8 x 6 in. #5045 Artist Biography: Émile Jean-Horace Vernet (1789–1863) was a renowned French painter celebrated for his vivid depictions of military and historical scenes. Born into a family of artists in Paris, Vernet was the son of Carle Vernet and grandson of Claude Joseph Vernet, both accomplished painters. His works, marked by dramatic compositions and meticulous attention to detail, gained popularity during the Napoleonic era and the Bourbon Restoration, capturing battles, portraits of soldiers, and episodes from French history. Vernet's reputation earned him the directorship of the French Academy in Rome in 1828. He was widely admired for blending realism with patriotic fervor, which resonated deeply with the French public and military. Horace VERNET (1789-1863) Esquisse pour la prise du bastion n°8 lors du siège de Rome à San Pancrazio le 30 juin 1849. Huile sur toile, esquisse signée et datée en rouge « H.VERNET 1851 » 28 x 55 cm. Cadre doré et décor de feuillages et feuilles de laurier. B.E. (Nettoyé, et petites restaurations par pièce) OEuvre en rapport : -« La prise du bastion n°8 lors du siège de Rome à San Pancrazio le 30 juin 1849 ». Huile sur toile monumentale (5 mètres par 10 mètres), conservée au Château de Versailles. Historique : Le 17 février 1850, un rapport au ministre de l’Intérieur définissait ainsi les conditions de la commande adressée à Vernet : « M. Horace Vernet, membre de l’Institut, est de retour de Rome où il vient de terminer les études nécessaires pour reproduire les principaux événements de cette dernière campagne. Nul n’est plus capable que cet artiste de retracer les brillantes affaires qui ont signalé le siège de Rome. J’ai donc l’honneur de vous proposer de le charger de l’exécution de trois grands tableaux destinés à figurer au Musée de Versailles, la composition principale aurait pour sujet la prise du bastion n° 8 qui décida de la soumission de Rome. […] Un tableau de cette importance ne peut pas être payé moins de 25 000 frs.[…] Cette somme est considérable, elle paraît faible toutefois si on la compare aux allocations que l’ancienne liste civile accordait au même artiste. » Notre esquisse semble être un des premiers essais de composition pour la toile finale. La vue topographique et les contours du Bastion sont identiques à la composition finale, le placement des troupes n’y est pas encore aussi développé que sur la toile de Versailles. Paris 20.IV.1837. -- An den Fürsten Wilhelm zu Sayn-Wittgenstein, dem er den Preis anheimgestellt hatte, den der Fürst für ein Gemälde Vernets zu zahlen bereit war. "... Le prix que Vous voulez bien mettre à mon tableau me fait sentir que faut. d'avoir fait mieux Vous me savez gré de mon zèle et de mes efforts ...". Versichert dem Fürsten seine größte Dankbarkeit und sendet am Schluß auch untertänigste Grüße an die Fürstin Wittgenstein. - Auf der Rückseite des Briefes befindet sich ein eigenhändiger Brief des Fürsten Wittgenstein (Castellammare 19.VI.1842) an einen "cher Prince", in dem er sich über den Brief Vernets und das betreffende Bild äußert: "... Le Tableau dont il parle dans ce Billet est de grandeur naturelle, il représente le retour de Chasse d'une Chatelaine. ma femme lui a servie de modèle pour la figure principale, mes enfants et moi complétons ce Tableau de famille. Je l'ai payé 25000 francs. - Je suppose que ce sont là toutes les informations que vous désirez avoir à ce sujet ...". - Wilhelm Fürst zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Hohenstein (1770-1851) war als enger Vertrauter Friedrich Wilhelms III. von Preußen der Hauptvertreter der Reaktion in Preußen, die er als Polizeiminister und Minister des Königl. Hauses durch "Demagogen"-Verfolgung und Spitzelsystem überall durchzusetzen suchte. - Reizvolles Autograph, bei dem der Brief eines prominenten Malers und ein viel späterer Brief seines ebenso prominenten Kunden zu demselben Bild sich auf ein- und demselben Blatt befinden.
