      Frederick Arthur Verner (1836 - 1928) American

      Est: $600 - $900

Frederick Arthur Verner (1836 - 1928) Watercolor on paper, Signed Lower Left, Measures (8 x 11 inches) w/frame (11 x 15.5 inches) Frederick Arthur Verner is the son of Arthur Verner, Armaugh Co., Ireland whose brother was Sir William Verner of Verner's Bridge. The barontage is now extinct since the Verner male descendancy is no longer. Only daughters remain in that lineage. Frederick Arthur Verner's ancestors can be found in Sir Bernard Burke's " Extinct Peerage and Barontage" under the heading: VERNER. Since the Barontage is extinct, you will have difficulty finding this record in recent reprints of Burke's volumes. An uncle of Frederick's named John Willoughby Verner lived in London in 1880s so some of the family moved from Ireland to London whereas others moved to Canada. Frederick would have visited his Uncle John Willoughby Verner (who spent some time in South Africa).

Frederick Arthur Verner (Canadian, 1836-1928) Mid-Day Buffalo

      Est: $8,000 - $12,000

Frederick Arthur Verner (Canadian, 1836-1928) Mid-Day Buffalo oil on canvas signed Verner (lower right) 24 x 36 inches Provenance: Uno Langman Limited, Vancouver, Canada Frederick Arthur Verner is one of several fine painters who made the Canadian West his subject, though he didn't actively pursue his art until he finished a stint in the British army that included fighting for Italian independence under Garibaldi. Verner returned to Canada, where, in 1873, he journeyed with a government detail to sign an important First Nations treaty. His sketches from this trip, and the careful studies of buffalo he began to make in 1875 formed the bulk of the reference he would use throughout his career. Mid-Day Buffalo depicts a languid, peaceful moment on what seems to be an endless prairie with only an undulant line of hills in the hazy distance. -James D. Balestrieri

Solunar charts exist to help sportsmen time their best opportunity. Sunrise and sunset, when fish are hungry and may be inclined to nibble at just about anything tempting, are notoriously good times to bait your hook. But in 1875, when this work was executed, such charts did not yet exist. One learnt when and where to fish by experience. F.A. Verner (1836-1928) was impressed by the depth of knowledge and skill Canada’s First Nations people possessed when it came to living off the land. There are many examples of paintings by him which record scenes of setting and breaking camp, canoeing and hunting - people expertly going about their daily tasks. In this lot, four figures have gathered at sunset, to fish under the emerging stars. By 1875, Verner’s own star was rising and he was now devoting all his time to painting as a result of the increasing popularity of his work. Joan Murray notes that “(B)y the spring of 1875 (Verner) had produced a surprising amount of new work.” She continues: “Among his paintings were his first subjects of evening or night scenes”, such as this lot. Estimate: $9,000–12,000

How ironic, therefore, to consider the threat posed to these majestic birds of prey poignantly portrayed by Frederick Verner (1836-1928) in Monarch of the Skies. When Verner was painting the buffalo of the prairies (see Lot 47), the population of these striking creatures was already under serious threat from over-hunting. There are limited statistics about the eagle population during this period, however, Verner’s background ablaze with the setting sun might be an indication that the artist had a hunch that this creature, too, was in peril. Certainly the double motif of sun and skeletal tree placed diagonally across the composition (a combination that dates at least to 1876) were used before to prophesy a premature end to something noble and proud. Though somewhat romanticized, Monarch of the Skies would have struck a chord with Verner’s English audience. As the librarian of the Royal Academy in London explained: “(Verner’s) subjects are very interesting to us who live on this side of the great salt lake; they record things which are doomed to pass away. The buffalo may already be classed with the Great Auk and the Dodo...” The idea of the fragility of nature strikes a chord with the modern viewer, too. This type of subject, while uncommon for Verner, is not unknown and another important animal painting, Marabou Stork of 1877, a watercolour in the collection of the Glenbow Museum, is reproduced in Joan Murray’s 1984 monograph of the artist.Estimate: $20,000–30,000

Indian encampments, buffalo subjects, even still lifes, enjoyed rhapsodic reviews. For decades the press heaped praise on Verner: "Grand in conception and almost faultless in execution" gushed Toronto's The Daily Globe in 1875. His works were seen as unparalleled and he himself was viewed as the obvious successor to Paul Kane albeit a more poetic and romantic interpreter of the land and its inhabitants. In fact, Verner and Kane met in 1862 and would become friends until the senior artist's death in 1871.  Like Kane he was of Anglo-Irish extraction, but was born in Canada. In an interesting and rare case of reverse migration, Verner emigrated to England in 1880 and except for three trips back to Canada remained there for the rest of his life. However, he continued to paint and exhibit and sell Canadian subjects while expanding his repertoire to include British scenes of thatched-roof cottages and abbey ruins. Joan Murray suggests that Verner's move to England "was an indication of the growing popularity of his work."Verner's interest in painting buffalo can be quite precisely dated and in 1865 he painted his first rendition of buffalo stampeding. It would be another five years before he tackled the subject again and it would be another five years more before Verner began drawing buffalo from life. By 1877, according to Joan Murray, Verner's best work was executed in watercolour. This lot, executed in 1882, benefits from Verner's evolved facility in this vexing medium and increased understanding of the anatomy and mien of the large monarchs of the prairie which he had by then studied in the flesh. 1882 was a marquee year for Verner both professionally and personally. It is the year he married. It is also the year he was to sell several important paintings to her Majesty, the Queen.Estimate: $12,000–15,000

According to Joan Murray, Verner first travelled west to the Red River Valley in 1873. On that trip, he would have encountered Ojibway encampments similar to the one depicted in this lot. While not contemporaneous with that first journey of discovery, this watercolour would have been based on a large repertory of notes and sketches compiled by Verner at that time and upon which he drew liberally throughout his career.Estimate: $7,000–9,000

Murray describes the 1873 trip west as "the most important event of (Verner's) life.” This watercolour is closely based on one of those sketches, now in the collection of the National Gallery of Canada. The 1874 oil painting of this subject which is nearly identical to this lot, Ojibway Camp of the North West Angle of the Lake of the Woods was sold by Waddington’s in November 2015 fetching $94,400. The Northwest Angle of Lake of the Woods is the northernmost part of the lake contiguous to the United States and, as such, served as a contentious area in treaties defining the international border of this "fifth" Great Lake.Estimate: $12,000–15,000

For these paintings, Verner relied on sketches he drew of buffalo in captivity. At least fifty-seven sketches - some executed in graphite and watercolour, others in charcoal - are known to have been made and he continually referred back to these when producing his canvases. According to Joan Murray, Verner’s buffalo paintings always contain at least one figure from his bank of fifty-seven sketches drawn from life. Examples of these sketches form part of the permanent collections of the National Gallery of Canada, and the McCord Museum in Montreal. By the time Verner began painting buffalo, the herds were already significantly depleted. Murray acknowledges that Verner was acutely aware of the tragic fate of this “monarch of the plains” noting that “the buffalo officially disappeared from Canada in 1879.” Nonetheless, Murray observes that “Verner never showed the buffalo as a hunted species. He preferred to paint them as magnificent beasts in a proud and free state in nature...”
