  • ELIZABETH O'NEILL VERNER DRYPOINT ETCHING SIGNED
    Oct. 13, 2024

ELIZABETH O'NEILL VERNER DRYPOINT ETCHING SIGNED

    Est: $900 - $1,200

Original Elizabeth O'Neill Verner (1883-1979) Drypoint Etching "St. Philips Gate", signed lower and titled in pencil by the artist, 2-1/2 x 2 in. (plate). In frame 5.5"x7.25". Weight 7 oz. Considered the matriarch of the Charleston Renaissance, Elizabeth O'Neill Verner created images of her native city that would, over time, come to be viewed as the quintessential aesthetic definition of Charleston and the South Carolina Lowcountry. The daughter of a rice broker, Verner began drawing as a child. She studied locally with Alice Ravenel Huger Smith before spending two years under Thomas Anshutz tutelage at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Returning to Charleston in 1903, she married E. Pettigrew Verner and raised two children. During this period, she studied informally, painting scenes of Charleston in her spare time and studying Japanese printing techniques. In 1923, she took up etching. In 1925 established her own studio in Charleston. A founding member of the Charleston Etchers Club, Verner was a respected leader in the city's art community. Along with Alice Smith, Anna Heyward Taylor, and Alfred Hutty, she played a pivotal role in Charleston's dramatic mid-century cultural renewal. Her works showcased Charleston's natural beauty and charm, including: live oaks draped in moss; tall cypress trees in abandoned rice preserves; colorful flower women; and the streets and alleyways of the city, a favorite motif. An extremely articulate artist, Verner taught (William Melton Halsey was a early student), lectured, and authored four books illustrated with her etchings. She also illustrated DuBose Heyward's Porgy and Bess. In recognition of her contribution to the arts, the state of South Carolina named a prestigious annual art award after Verner. Her works are represented in the collections of national institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Smithsonian American Art Museum, as well as leading museums across the Southeast.

Provenance: Given by the artist to consignor's grandfather and then by descent in the family of the consignor; Private Charleston Collection Note on the history of this recent discovery: As the owner of the Elizabeth O'Neill Verner painting I'd like to give a little history as to how I acquired this beautiful and unique piece. My grandfather, Harry John O'Neill, was Beth (Elizabeth O'Neill) Verner's older brother. They were extremely close and he promoted her career. He was always supportive of her. My mother, Terence O'Neill, was Harry's oldest daughter. We all lived in downtown Charleston within walking distance of each other and had a lovely friendship with Aunt Beth. She would often be on the sidewalk in front of her studio chatting to neighbors and tourists alike. My mother would take us to visit and watch her paint and she loved the company of family. She was loaded with personality and so sweet to us. We were oblivious to her talent at that time but as children, we just loved watching her work. This painting which I've inherited was gifted to my mother by Aunt Beth, along with another of marsh & oak trees, probably around the early 1950's. We grew up seeing it at our house and when my mother died, 22 years ago, my brother inherited it. He passed away last September and he thoughtfully left the painting to me. It has never been shown or even viewed by the public so it's sort of a "discovery". It evokes a lot of memories of growing up in Charleston and having the wonderful experiences we had as children. We had no idea how privileged we were, way back in the 1940's & 50's to live in this city and wander the streets unencumbered by crowds of tourists and we really had no idea how privileged we were to have Elizabeth O'Neill Verner as our lovely Aunt Beth!

    Elizabeth O'Neill Verner (American/South Carolina)

    Est: $3,000 - $5,000

Elizabeth O'Neill Verner (American/South Carolina, 1883-1979), "Portrait of a Man with Cane and Pipe", pastel on silk laid on board, faintly signed lower left, 9 1/16 in. x 8 11/16 in., unframed. Note: Charleston native Elizabeth O’Neill Verner was one of South Carolina’s most prominent artists of the early twentieth century – a matriarch of the Charleston Renaissance. Working primarily in pastel and printmaking, she depicted the architecture, street scenes and citizens of her hometown. Verner received early art training from Alice Ravenel Huger Smith followed by a stint at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia. In 1907, she married and had two children, with art-making a pursuit occupying only her spare time for many years. In 1923, she opened a printmaking studio and produced images of Charleston and its environs. Upon the unexpected death of her husband in 1925, Verner sought out commissions to provide a steady income and became a dedicated historic preservationist of nearby municipalities and institutions. In addition to her focus on architecture, she also excelled as a portraitist and figure painter. Her distinctive pastel drawings of Charleston’s flower women and vegetable vendors are among her best-known works. At one point, the mayor of Charleston threatened to outlaw the activities of the vendors, but Verner came to their defense. Not only was she indebted to them as models for her work, but she believed in their contributions to the charming fabric of Charleston. Verner is represented in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Smithsonian American Art Museum and leading museums across the South.
