It follows models of JOSE VERGARA (Valencia, 1726- 1799), XVIII century. "Immaculate Conception". Oil on canvas.

          Est: €2,400 - €2,800

It follows models of JOSE VERGARA (Valencia, 1726- 1799), XVIII century. "Immaculate Conception". Oil on canvas. Measurements: 105 x 75 cm. Ascensional representation of the Immaculate Conception surrounded by angels. In composition and style it follows closely the homonymous painting of José Vergara conserved in the Museum of Fine Arts of Valencia. The blue mantle and the white tunic (symbols of purity) that dresses the full-length figure, together with the attributes that symbolize the Immaculate Conception (among which the crescent moon stands out as an emblem of power over evil) make up a typically baroque dynamic devotional painting. The foreshortenings of each child stand out, with the plump bodies modeled one by one with a successful play of light. In the center of the break of glory shines the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove. José Vergara Gimeno was the most outstanding Valencian painter of the second half of the 18th century. With an enormous pictorial work, both in fresco and on easel, he evolved from the late Baroque to Neoclassicism. He is the founder of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Carlos in 1768.

Spanish school of the 18th century. Following models by JOSÉ VERGARA GIMENO (Valencia, 1726 - 1799). "Portrait of Queen Bárbara de Braganza, wife of Fernando VI. Oil on canvas. Measurements: 102 x 82 cm; 124.5 x 104 cm (frame). The one we present here is a portrait of Queen Bárbara de Braganza, wife of Ferdinand VI, based on the one painted by the Valencian painter José Vergara, the latter now conserved in the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Carlos in Valencia. Bárbara de Braganza was a Portuguese Infanta, daughter of John V of Portugal and Maria Anna of Austria. Barbara married the then Prince of Asturias, Ferdinand VI, in 1729, and became Queen consort of Spain. She had no children. In this canvas the artist depicts an elegant and beautiful portrait of Bárbara de Braganza, dominated by the cold colours of the party dress and the background, a flat wall painted in dark tones, in which a window opens onto a seascape of bluish, watery and vibrant tones. The woman appears seated, with her body in profile and her face frontally turned towards us, looking at us, with the viewer's eyes on her, thus creating a more personal and intimate connection with the sitter. The model, aware of her magnetic beauty, allows herself to be admired by the viewer, without losing any of her elegance. As a counterpoint to the luminous image, dominated by the very delicate and finely worked light, transparent tones, we see two points of opaque colour that attract our gaze: the jewels that accompany Bárbara de Braganza's clothes, and the red velvet armchair that can be glimpsed, which balances the asymmetrical composition in a subtle and harmonious way.

          Jan. 26, 2022

JOSE VERGARA (1726 / 1799) "The Sacred Heart of Jesus as Good Shepherd"

          Est: €3,000 - €4,000

Together with José Camarón and Luis Planes, José Vergara was one of the leading figures of early academicism in Valencia. Together with his brother, the sculptor Ignacio Vergara, and other Valencian artists, he founded the Academy of Santa Bárbara in 1753, which would be the seed of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Carlos. His artistic output is very varied and he produced numerous important fresco paintings, miniatures and canvases, such as the one shown here representing the Sacred Heart of Jesus with the iconography of the Good Shepherd. In this work the use of models by Juan de Juanes is still evident, but with a fully academicist aesthetic approach of precise drawing and a chromatic palette of soft tones. . 114 x 87 cm.. Tondo attributed to JOSÉ VERGARA GIMENO (Valencia, 1726 - 1799). "Apparition of the Infant Jesus to Saint Anthony of Padua". Oil on panel. It has slight repainting and a 19th century frame. Measurements: 58,5 x 44 cm; 69 x 54 cm (frame). Religious scene that presents the theme of the apparition of the Child Jesus to Saint Anthony of Padua.Saint Anthony of Padua or of Lisbon (Lisbon, ca. 1191 to 1195 - Padua, 1231) was a Franciscan friar, preacher and theologian, venerated by his miracles and as a saint and Doctor of the Church, who was first member of the Order of regular canons of Saint Augustine, until he became a Franciscan in 1220. St. Anthony of Padua is, after St. Francis of Assisi, the most popular of the Franciscan saints. He is depicted as a beardless youth in a broad monastic tonsure, dressed in a habit, and is often shown with the Infant Jesus, holding him in his arms, alluding to an apparition he had in his cell. It became the most popular attribute of this saint from the 16th century onwards, being especially popular in the Baroque art of the Counter-Reformation. Due to its formal characteristics, we can relate this work to the hand of José Vergara Gimeno, one of the most outstanding painters of Valencian Neoclassicism. He co-founded the San Carlos Academy together with his brother Ignacio and other artists, and was appointed its director in 1789. He broke with the Baroque aesthetic and renewed the Valencian artistic panorama by decorating numerous churches in fresco and painting altar canvases, with religious themes being the most abundant in his production. He also carried out numerous commissions for the city council and painted important portraits, such as that of Ferdinand VI. He is represented in the Valencia Fine Arts Museum, among other public and private centres.
