      Est: $8,000 - $12,000

WILLIAM VERELST (british fl. 1734-ca. 1756) PORTRAIT OF THE ARCHITECT, MASTER OF THE STEELYARDS, AND PHILANTHROPIST-THEODORE JACOBSEN Inscribed and dated 'ARS HABET NON INIMICUM NISI IGNORANTIAM-1736' lower left, oil on canvas 43 3/8 x 39 3/4 in. (110.2 x 101cm) provenance: Sabin Galleries Ltd., London, United Kingdom. Private Collection, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. note: Theodore Jacobsen (d. 1772) was a wealthy British merchant of German descent. His family was engaged in the business of managing the Steelyard, which was established in London during the early days of the Hanseatic merchants. Theodore became Housemaster in 1735 - a year before the present work was painted - following the death of his brother, Sir Jacob Jacobsen. Though an amateur architect, Theodore Jacobsen is credited with numerous accomplishments; these include creating designs for London's Foundling Hospital (founded for the maintenance and education of abandoned children), The Royal Naval Hospital at Gosport, and designs for "Lonesome Lodge," the artist's home near Dorking, Surrey. Verlest was an accomplished portrait painter. He was a member of both the Royal and Antiquarian Societies and The Society of Artists. Additionally, he was made a Governor of the Foundling Hospital in 1739, an honor bestowed on other important British painters of the day, including Thomas Hudson and William Hogarth. Coincidentally, both Hudson and Hogarth also painted portraits of Theodore Jacobsen. Hudson's portrait of Jacobsen was presented to the Foundling Hospital in 1746, and Hogarth's portrait of Jacobsen is now in the collection of Oberlin College, Ohio.

      Jun. 11, 2002

      WILLIAM VERELST (FL. 1734-1756)

      Est: $37,250 - $52,150

PORTRAIT OF A BOY, FULL-LENGTH, IN A PALE RED SILVER EMBROIDERED COAT, WAISTCOAT, AND BREECHES, WITH A SPANIEL, A STAFF IN HIS RIGHT HAND AND A TRICORN ON THE GROUND AT HIS FEET, BY A PLINTH IN A WOODED LANDSCAPE SIGNED AND DATED 'W M VERELST 1738' (LOWER LEFT) OIL ON CANVAS 601/2 X 43 IN. (152.5 X 109.2 CM.) IN AN 18TH CENTURY CARVED AND GILDED COMPOSITION FRAME NOTES THIS PORTRAIT HAS IN THE PAST BEEN IDENTIFIED AS A PORTRAIT OF THE EARL OF CHESTERFIELD AND BEARS A HANDWRITTEN LABEL ON THE REVERSE OF THE FRAME TO THIS EFFECT. HOWEVER, THE PORTRAIT IS DATED 1738 AND THIS MAKES SUCH AN IDENTIFICATION IMPOSSIBLE AS PHILIP DORMER, 4TH EARL OF CHESTERFIELD WAS BORN IN 1694 AND DIED IN 1773. NOR CAN IT BE A PORTRAIT OF HIS ONLY SUCCESSOR, PHILIP, WHO SUCCEEDED AS 5TH EARL OF CHESTERFIELD FOR HE WAS NOT BORN UNTIL 1755. WILLIAM VERELST, WHO WAS PROBABLY THE YOUNGER BROTHER OF THE PORTRAIT PAINTER JOHN VERELST (FL. 1698-1734), AND SON OF THE FLOWER PAINTER CORNELIUS VERELST (1667-1728), WHOSE FATHER HARMAN VERELST HAD WORKED IN ENGLAND FROM 1683, WAS THE BEST PORTRAITIST OF THE VERELST FAMILY, PAINTING BOTH LIFE SIZE PORTRAITS SUCH AS THIS, AND SMALLER SCALE CONVERSATION PIECES.
