ROSEN, NARZISSEN UND MOHNBLUMEN IN EINER VASE Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 57,2 x 45,4 cm. Links unten Bezeichnung und Datierung „Rachel Ruysch 1716“. In dekorativem, teilvergoldeten Rahmen. 73 x 88 cm. In breitem ebonisierten Rahmen. (1420493) (13) Simon Pietersz. Verelst, 1644 The Hague – 1721 London STILL LIFE WITH GRAPES, ROSES, PUMPKIN, PEACHES ON SILVER PLATE Oil on canvas. 73 x 88 cm. We would like to thank Dr Fred G Meijer for his kind advice. A comparable still life, less lavish in its decoration, is listed at the RKD in The Hague under no. 231160 and could be found at Dickinson in London in 2010. A portrait format painting, which was offered at Christie’s in London under a different artist’s name on 12 April 1985 under lot 67 is now also considered to be by Simon Verelst. It also shows fruit displayed on a similarly beautiful silver plate.

Description EN Flower still life with roses, tulips, poppies, and carnations. Oil on canvas. Below of this beautiful flower still life, on the marble tabletop, a perched swallowtail can be seen. Many similar writhing peonies appear in Simon Verhelst's oeuvre. On the other hand, some similar flowers can also be found in a work by Willem van Aelst (1627-1683) and Ernst Stuyven (1627-1683). Yet stylistically there is too little resemblance to the above artists to attribute the painting to any of them with certainty. In the lower centre of the bouquet is nasturtium (oriental cress), a small orange flower with five deeply incised leaves. This is very atypical of Willem van Aelst and followers, but is more often seen in the work of Southern Netherlandish or French artists.

Simon Verelst, Floral Still Life Simon Verelst was among the leading Dutch painters of flower still lifes in the late 17th century. His paintings are characterised by their elegant compositions and colour schemes. Verelst was born into a family of artists in the Hague in 1644, but he moved to London in 1668, like many artists from the Netherlands at this time, in order to further his carreer in the prosperous English capital. The artist's work in the city is even documented by Samuel Pepys, who recorded a visit to Verelst's studio in his famous diary. The artist may also have later been active in Paris, as his influence is evident in the work of the still life painters there. 75 x 63 cm
