(1587 Amsterdam - 1630 Den Haag) attr.; Landschaft mit Reiter vor einer Ruine Feinflüssig gemaltes, in tonigem Kolorit ausgeführtes Werk des holländischen Landschaftsmalers, wohl um 1620-1630. Er gehört zu den großen Erneuerern und Vorreitern der realistischen holländischen Landschaftsmalerei des 17. Jhs., indem er pittoreske und erzählerische Details vernachlässigte und stattdessen Wert auf die Wiedergabe atmosphärischer Stimmungen legte. Ein beliebtes Motiv waren überdies Reiter und Reitergefechte in Landschaften. Der aus einer Malerfamilie stammende Künstler lernte bei seinem Vater Hans van de Velde und war vermutlich auch ein Schüler von Gillis van Coninxloo (III) und David Vinckboons. Nach dem Tod seines Vaters (1609) zog er nach Haarlem, wo er 1612 in die Lukasgilde aufgenommen wurde, 1618 wurde er in Den Haag ansässig. Öl/Eichenholztafel. Verso altes Etikett des 19. Signed lower right: E VAN. DEN / VEL.DE Esaias van de Velde was among the first Dutch painters of the early 17th century to abandon the old Mannerist conventions of landscape in favour of a more naturalistic view of the world. In this beautiful early work, a windmill dominates the composition, silhouetted against the winter sky. This winter scene was probably painted in Haarlem, where Esaias lived from 1609 to 1618 before moving to The Hague. In his monograph on the painter, George Keyes assigned this winter picture a counterpart in the form of a summer landscape with haybales, which is dated 1616 (G. Keyes 1984, pp. 154–55, no. 130, fig. 79). This date appears yet more plausible when one compares the work to a very similar winter scene dated 1616 (G. Keyes 1984, p. 147, no. 101). Both landscapes are not conceived from the traditional bird's eye view, but from the observer's perspective. When it was exhibited in Amsterdam in 1932, this painting was not owned by the Dutch dealer Jacques Goudstikker, but was being offered for sale by a private collector.

Mit diesem kleinen Tondo gelingt es Esaias van de Velde d. Ä. den Betrachter in eine sehr reizvolle Landschaft miteinzubeziehen. Im Vordergrund findet sich ein Reiter mit Umhang und Hut im Schritttempo, der durch seine Rückenansicht den Blick des Betrachters in die Landschaft einführt. Auf der linken Seite tritt eine Person vor die Pforte einer verfallenen Festung, eine Ruine, die von Pflanzen überwuchert ist. Dieses Werk zeichnet sich durch die Feinheit aus, mit der Esaias van de Velde die Details wiedergegeben hat. Die drei Vögel links sind mit feinen Pinselstrichen gemalt. Die am Horizont umherschweifenden Figuren sowie die Vogelschwärme, die in den dämmrigen Himmel fliegen, werden mit wenigen Strichen verdeutlicht. Die Schrift seiner Signatur, die auf ein Stück Holz im Vordergrund angebracht wurde, ist haarbreit. Esaias van de Velde war ein produktiver und von seiner Zeit geschätzter Maler, Zeichner und Radierer, der zwischen 1610 und 1630 in Haarlem und Den Haag, tätig war. Schon früh spezialisierte er sich auf die Darstellung von Landschaften. Dabei handelt es sich um eine Gattung, die bis dahin noch am Anfang ihrer Blüte war und von der einige Kleinformate, wie unser Gemälde, erhalten sind. Er war der Lehrer einer ganzen Generation niederländischer Künstler in der ersten Hälfte des 17. Jahrhunderts, wie Pieter de Neyn (1597–1639) und Jan van Goyen (1596–1656, siehe Los 3024, 3041, 3061, 3070 und 3073). Das hier angebotene Gemälde ist im RKD, Den Haag, archiviert. Esaias van de Velde, seit 1612 Mitglied in der Haarlemer Lukasgilde, wurde als richtungsweisender Landschaftsmaler zu einem der Hauptvertreter der Haarlemer Schule. Seine realistische Auffassung der Natur schafft große Veränderung zwischen der manieristischen Malerei des 16. Jahrhunderts und der atmosphärischen Landschaftsdarstellung am Anfang des 17. Jahrhunderts. Als einer seiner berühmtesten Schüler und Nachfolger gilt heute Jan van Goyen. In dem hier vorliegenden Gemälde, datiert auf 1624, zeigt van der Velde nicht nur sein wahrhaftiges Talent als Landschaftsmaler - er verknüpft es auch, wenn noch etwas zurückgenommen, mit seinem Interesse an Pferdedarstellungen und Staffagefiguren. Die Darstellung nimmt den Blick des Betrachters gefangen und leitet ihn um den großen, felsigen Hügel herum zum erhöht liegenden Kirchturm und in die weitläufige Landschaft.

He created authoritative prototypes for dune and river landscapes, which inspired the works of many Dutch artists, including his most famous pupil Jan van Goyen. This landscape, dated 1624, is enlivened by various figures, including a horse-drawn cart in the foreground and a rider striding towards a wooden bridge that crosses a stream. Bizarre rock formations dominate the middle ground, while a ruined castle and church tower perch on a steep hill in the background.

A la mort de ce dernier, Esaias s'installe à Haarlem avec sa mère et ses deux sœurs, où il est répertorié en tant que peintre à partir de 1609, rejoignant la guilde de Saint Luc en 1612. En 1618, il rejoint La Haye qu'il ne quittera plus jusqu'à la fin de sa carrière. C'est essentiellement avec ses paysages qu'Esaias van den Velde se distingue, maniant avec talent les techniques du dessin, de l'estampe et de la peinture, et s'affirmant comme l'un des pionniers de ce genre pictural à Haarlem où il eut comme élève Jan van Goyen. Utilisant volontiers le format rond, il y a disposé ici avec sobriété et intelligence un séduisant paysage d'hiver où s'égayent les patineurs sur une rivière gelée à l'entrée d'un village. L'atmosphère neigeuse se laisse deviner dans le subtil camaïeux gris-brun employé par le peintre, que les touches de rouge des vêtements des personnages viennent habilement réveiller. Esaias van de Velde played a decisive role not only in the development of the "Merry Company" subject, but also paved the way for the realistic conception of landscape in Dutch painting in the first quarter of the 17th century. He created authoritative prototypes for dune and river landscapes, which inspired the works of many Dutch artists, including his most famous pupil Jan van Goyen. This landscape depiction, dated 1624, is enlivened by various figures, including a horse-drawn cart in the foreground and a rider striding towards a wooden bridge that crosses a stream. Bizarre rock formations dominate the middle ground, while a ruined castle and church tower perch on a steep hill in the background.

In the first quarter of the 17th century, he paved the way for the realistic conception of landscape in Dutch painting and created influential prototypes for dune and river landscapes which inspired many Dutch artists, including his most famous pupil, Jan van Goyen. The first of these Merry Company pictures were painted in Haarlem in around 1615. They depicted figures in contemporary dress enjoying themselves with food and drink, music and dance, or playing cards. The importance of the erotic undertones in these paintings, revealed in the depiction of couples and their more or less successful courtship scenes, can hardly be overestimated. Such depictions were therefore usually accompanied by moralising messages, warning the viewer against useless pastimes or even debauchery. This panel in miniature format shows a Merry Company scene on a terrace in a park landscape and thus belongs to the special genre of the buitenpartij, i.e. an outdoor party. It depicts six people gathered around a richly laden table: The lady sitting at the front is enduring the clumsy approaches of a man, while she herself appears to be looking at the lute player standing at the opposite end of the table. Between them, two other persons are sitting at the long side of the table, attended by a young servant. The figures of the servant and the lutenist, standing or sitting, appear frequently in van de Velde's Merry Companies, which the artist executed mainly in the decade between 1614 and 1624.
