Although Adriaen van den Velde, a son of the marine painter Willem van de Velde the Elder, died relatively young, he still produced a varied œuvre that included landscapes, animal pieces, genre paintings and portraits. He was also a popular figure painter who, according to Houbraken, painted the figures in works by Jan Hackaert, Jan van der Heyden and Frederik de Moucheron, among others.

Seine meist südlichen Landschaften mit Hirten und Vieh in italienischer Umgebung legen einen Aufenthalt in Italien nahe, der urkundlich aber nicht belegt ist. Adriaen van de Velde was the son of the seascape painter Willem van de Velde the Elder and the younger brother of Willem van de Velde the Younger. He was only granted a short creative period of 18 years. His mostly southern landscapes with shepherds and cattle in Italian surroundings suggest that he spent time in Italy, although there is no documentary evidence of this. Nació en el seno de una familia de pintores: tanto su padre, Willem van de Velde I, como su hermano, Willem van de Velde, el Joven, fueron afamados pintores de marinas. La mayor parte de su obra está formada por paisajes de su Holanda natal, que alternó desde los inicios de su carrera, y especialmente a partir de 1667, con vistas italianas. Estas últimas, que derivan de los paisajes de Nicolaes Berchem y Karel du Jardin, pues no está documentado que viajara a Italia, representan pastores y animales situados en paisajes montañosos, a menudo próximos a las ruinas clásicas, e iluminados por la clara luz mediterránea. Fue un artista versátil que también pintó escenas de invierno, retratos en exteriores, alegorías, temas religiosos y de historia, así como alguna escena de género. Biography from the Archives of askART: Adriaen van de Velde (baptized.30 November 1636, in Amsterdam – buried 21 January 1672, in Amsterdam), was a Dutch animal and landscape painter, son of Willem van de Velde the Elder and brother of Willem van de Velde the Younger, the marine painter. Adriaen did not want to become a marine painter so he was trained in the studio of Jan Wynants, the landscape painter. There he made the acquaintance of Philip Wouwerman, who is believed to have aided him in his studies of animals, and to have exercised a powerful and beneficial influence upon his art. Having made exceptionally rapid progress, he was soon employed by his master to introduce figures into his landscape compositions, and he rendered a similar service to Hobbema, Ruisdael, Verboom and other contemporary artists. According to Houbraken, he died while in collaboration with Jan van der Heyden and Frederik de Moucheron, painting animals on their paintings. His favourite subjects were scenes of open pasture land, with sheep, cattle and goats, which he executed with dexterity, with much precision of touch and truth of draughtsmanship, and with clear silvery colouring. He painted a few small winter scenes with skaters, and several religious subjects, such as the Descent from the Cross, for a Roman Catholic hidden church in Amsterdam and The Migration of Jacob (1663, Wallace Collection. In addition to his paintings, of which nearly two hundred have been catalogued, he executed about twenty etchings, several of which appear from their dates to have been done in his fourteenth year. They are distinguished by directness of method and by delicacy and certainty of touch. Van de Velde lived in Kalverstraat, near the Regulierspoort.

Adriaen Van de Velde (Amsterdam 1636 - 1732) Contadina con gregge al fiume Olio su tela 30 x 30 cm La tela in questione è una tipica espressione del paesaggismo nordico italianizzante. Il tema del paesaggio italiano idealizzato nasce come diretta conseguenza del ritorno ai luoghi natii dei pittori olandesi dopo aver fatto il classico viaggio di studio in Italia. Tra i molti artisti che dipinsero nella nostra penisola prima di far ritorno in patria vanno sicuramente citati J. Pinas, C. Van Poelenburgh, J. Both, J. asselyn, N. Berchem, C.Dujardin e J.B. Weenix. L’Italia, e il Lazio in particolare, vengono presentati come un luogo di bellezza poetica ove l’inverno dura appena qualche mese, il territorio pianeggiante è dolcemente mosso dalle colline e attraversato da placidi corsi d’acqua, un luogo dove bellezza e storia s’incontrano grazie al patrimonio di rovine e monumenti d’epoca romana. Quest'opera è attinente con la produzione di Adriaen Van de Velde, il quale era solito riprendere queste scene di vita popolare da un punto di vista molto ravvicinato, con una particolare bravura nella rappresentazione degli animali.
