Lydia Velasco (b. 1942) White Grain

    Est: ₱120,000 - ₱156,000

Lydia Velasco (b. 1942) White Grain signed and dated 7/18/2011 (lower left) oil on canvas 48” x 36” (122 cm x 91 cm) Accompanied by a certificate signed by the artistconfirming the authenticity of this lot The art of Lydia Velasco stars a strong set of female figures. As a parent or a worker, a deity or a brideto- be, she depicts them in varying emotions, gestures, and inherent qualities. A Velasco muse embodies not only physical power but also a palpable strength of character and spirit while maintaining elegance and charisma. In this oil painting titled White Grain, the women in white garments are gathered around the white grain. White, as a color, is oftentimes used to portray purity. As such, in Filipino culture, white grain or rice is seen as more than a staple food, it is also an emblem of prosperity, fertility, and purity. Also a central part of some cultures around the world, rice is most evident in weddings and blessings of new homes. The details that Velasco puts in her paintings tell that she is more than a painter, she is also a storyteller. Furthermore, owing to her refined manipulation of line and color, she is able to render the women in her canvas with radiant presence and stunning contours that complement their distinct silhouettes. “Elongated, massive, heavily set, and invigorated with almost masculine assertiveness,” as described by the feminist artist. Still, no matter their intimidating presence, her muses exude warmth and beauty. (P.I.R.)

    Lydia Velasco (b. 1942) - Immaculate

    Est: ₱180,000 - ₱234,000

Lydia Velasco (b. 1942) Immaculate signed and dated 2011 (lower left) oil on canvas 36" x 36" (91 cm x 91 cm) Immaculate is a 2011 piece by Lydia Velasco, a feminist artist whose oeuvres are devoted to celebrating the femininity of the Filipina. Alluding to Mary, the mother of Christ, a unique perspective of the Virgin Birth is explored on the canvas — a feat that owes to the trademark artistic treatment of Velasco that lends a sense of intense tension and palpable passion. The art of Velasco features a strong set of female figures, a detail present in this oil painting. Often portrayed with delicate facial features, Mary is depicted by Velasco in her signature style of dramatic contours and elongated physique, exuding a presence of grace and resounding fervor. Posing with an overawing posture, she holds her child in a manner distinct from the typical renditions of Mary and Christ. The white cloth floating from the infant’s body resembles wings, a display of spiritual symbolism. (P.I.R.)

    Lydia Velasco (b. 1942) - Pulang Belo

    Est: ₱120,000 - ₱156,000

Lydia Velasco (b. 1942) Pulang Belo signed and dated 2007 (lower center) oil on canvas 36" x 24" (91 cm x 61 cm) Accompanied by a certificate issued by Galerie Artes and signed by the artist confirming the authenticity of this lot The femininity of the Filipina inspires the oeuvres of Lydia Velasco. A feminist artist herself, the prolific painter renders her muses in a manner that is enkindled by her personal experiences. Velasco describes her subjects as “elongated, massive, heavily set, and invigorated with almost masculine assertiveness,” implying a reversal of gender roles and a criticism of the perceived inferiority of women in a male-dominated society. Her female figures are rendered with radiant presence and exaggerated contours that complement their silhouettes. Thus, the unique approach provides a Velasco piece a sense of growing tension as well as genuine emotion – this is the classic defining feature of her artistic approach as seen in this 2007 oil on canvas painting. Lydia Velasco (b. 1942) Haplos ni Ina VII signed and dated 2021 (lower left) oil on canvas 24" x 18" (61 cm x 46 cm) Accompanied by a certificate issued by Galerie Artes and signed by the artist confirming the authenticity of this lot As a feminist, Lydia Velasco is a contemporary artist whose oeuvres are devoted to celebrating the femininity of the Filipina. Her muses, vivified with expressive features and vibrant complexion, exude an aura that is assertive of their glory, identity, and freedom amid a predominantly patriarchal society. Velasco describes her depictions of women as having an elongated physique and manifesting a masculine vigor. For art critic Cid Reyes, a Velasco woman is strong yet still overflowing with femininity, a “balancing act between grace and aggression.” A 2021 piece titled Haplos ni Ina VII, the painting depicts a mother adorned in floral designs, from hair accessories to the pattern of her garment, and a child asleep from her tender cradle. A mother’s tender touch is a constant theme in Velasco’s paintings, creating various versions of it for more than a decade. Her love for the arts was rooted in her childhood, taking inspiration from her parents who are also appreciators of art. Her father was a set designer for LVN studios while her mother was a homemaker who occasionally painted still life pieces. As a mother, her children followed in her footsteps as artists - Chi is into sculpture, Chigo is into contemporary arts, Owen is an art dealer, and Alona is the manager of the family-owned Galerie Artes. Lday 1 signed and dated 2005 (lower right) acrylic on canvas 48" x 28" (122 cm x 71 cm) Velasco's female figure, a motif the artist is widely regarded for, features exaggerated contours and lines that complement the figure's relatively heightened scale and proportions. This unnatural treatment lends Velasco's work a sense of both burgeoning tension and palpable passion. Each brush stroke is visually distinct, allowing the viewer to experience the scene's spatial presence despite the inherent flatness of the canvas. Velasco is also no stranger to suggestive and evocative themes. Yet her works are never shallow nor gratifyingly provocative. Instead, Velasco's figures are undeniably progressive, able to find and accept dignity within the natural desires of the body and the flesh. One of the most notable Filipina modernist painters, Lydia Velasco depicts strong and impressive women in her works. Her signature female figures dominating the canvases show various personalities and moods, characterized by sensuousness, strength, and an almost-masculine assertiveness. Velasco asserts women's identity and freedom through the elongated and massively rendered subjects, which also show the artist's view of the inherent qualities of women.

Lydia Velasco (b. 1948) Caloy Gabuco (b. 1956) Untitled signed and dated 2016 (lower center and lower right) mixed media on canvas 48" x 36" (122 cm x 91 cm) PROPERTY FROM THE COLLECTION OF A DISTINGUISHED GENTLEMAN Lydia Velasco’s women subjects are portrayed as strong, vigorous, hardworking, independent and assertive, yet at the same time tender, caring, graceful and sensual - reflective of all the facets of the artist’s inner self. Velasco’s portrayal of women exhibits the ideal Filipino woman, wherein she continuously tries to portray women from their own perception of themselves and values the proper presentation of women in art. No wonder, a collaborative work with Caloy Gabuco whose works are also often focused on human faces and celestial beings came to fruition. What makes Gabuco’s works unique is the way he painted the expressions on their faces. The subjects seem to talk to the audience, conveying some melancholic and insightful messages. Furthermore, the men, the women, and the children in his pieces often take you to the inner journey as you gaze into their eyes. And as they stare back at you, their eyes often penetrate your soul. With the same visual interpretation through their subjects' expressions, Velasco and Gabuco, bring forth the featured Untitled masterpiece. Though different in style - Velasco exhibiting the ideal Filipina and Gabuco presenting his woman subject in a celestial concept - both share the same reflection and imagery of presenting women to the viewers in a penetrating stare depicting the strength, the assertiveness yet tender and graceful facets - bringing the viewers to a whole different world alongside penetrating the innermost depth of their souls.
