      Est: €5,000 - €6,000

JOSÉ VELA ZANETTI (Milagros, Burgos, 1913 - Burgos, 1999). "El Cid", 1982. Oil on panel. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. Signed, dated and titled on the back. Measurements: 61 x 71 cm; 87 x 97 cm (frame). This work belongs to a series of sketches that the artist made to prepare his mural "El Cid", with a surface of 200 meters, the mural is located in the dome of the deputation of Burgos. Vela Zanetti took years to consecrate this commission, from 1965 to 1969, a period in which he made numerous drawings that were not subsequently applied to the mural, but were exhibited in Madrid. Born in Milagros, in the province of Burgos, he moved to León with his family when he was a child. There he held his first exhibition in 1931. Supported by his father, after finishing high school he traveled to Madrid for a few months to see exhibitions and visit the Prado Museum. Shortly afterwards he obtained a scholarship to visit Italy, granted by the Provincial Council of León. As a consequence of the Spanish Civil War he went to the Dominican Republic, where he remained until 1960. In Santo Domingo he started, together with other exiled artists, the National School of Fine Arts. During this period he had exhibitions and projects in Mexico, Colombia, Puerto Rico and the United States. In 1951, the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation of New York awarded him a grant for a singular project: the creation of a large-scale mural for one of the main spaces of the United Nations headquarters, in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This project definitively catapulted the master from Burgos, and is today considered his most important work both for its symbolic relevance and for its expressiveness and artistic quality. He himself said of this work: "I hope that those who contemplate this mural will realize that peace must be won, not once and forever, but every day, remembering the sufferings of the past and making real what men aspire to for the future". Vela Zanetti also painted other important murals, such as those on historical themes for the Provincial Council of Burgos or the frescoes of the old Ercilia Theater in Barahona, Dominican Republic. He was an academician of San Fernando, and Doctor Honoris Causa by the University of Burgos. The Centro Cultural de la Villa de Madrid held in 2001, under the title "Antológica", a retrospective exhibition on the work of Vela Zanetti, the most important to date. In 2009 an exhibition commemorating the tenth anniversary of his death was held at the Ángeles Penche gallery in Madrid. Soon, an important exhibition dedicated to the work of Vela Zanetti was held at the Fórum Evolución in Burgos, commemorating the centenary of his birth and the most complete anthology of this painter held to date. His works are currently preserved in the collections of the Caja Rural de Burgos and the Vela Zanetti Foundation in León, as well as murals in various cities in Spain, Santo Domingo, the United States, Colombia and Switzerland.

JOSÉ VELA ZANETTI (Milagros, Burgos, 1913 - Burgos, 1999). "Our bread", 1979. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated in the lower left corner. Signed, dated and titled on the back. Measurements: 57 x 76 cm; 72 x 92 cm (frame). Following the words of the Vela Zanetti Foundation "One of the themes of the small format painting would be the still lifes, very particular of Vela Zanetti, because they have the characteristic of being rural and rough. It is his interpretation of the Castilian still life and the fact of putting things of second order as protagonists what makes these works so valuable. The objects he represents are those typical of the countryside, as in this case the loaf of bread, the keys, the water jug or a lemon. In the background, a peeling wall meticulously done, emphasizes the color and amplifies the nuances." Born in Milagros, in the province of Burgos, he moved to León with his family when he was a child. There he held his first exhibition in 1931. Supported by his father, after finishing high school he travels to Madrid for a few months to see exhibitions and visit the Prado Museum. JOSÉ VELA ZANETTI (Milagros, Burgos, 1913 - Burgos, 1999). "The lunch".1989. Oil on board. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. Measurements: 83 x 67 cm; 116 x 100 x 5 cm (frame). Vela Zanetti is considered the painter of the soul of Castile, since he knew how to masterfully portray his land through his workers, whom he endowed with a noble, almost heroic bearing, as we see in this canvas. The essence of his painting is captured in this one: the peasant is taking a break from his daily work from sunrise to sunset. His figure occupies a large part of the painting, as he prepares to cut a piece of bread. Behind him, an arid land stretches out. The fiery palette lends an olive hue to the figure's weathered complexion. The features are chiseled with an impetuous stroke, as are the hands. Here Vela Zanetti uses an expressionist and realistic language that delves into social reality with passion. Born in Milagros, in the province of Burgos, he moved to León with his family when he was a child. There he held his first exhibition in 1931. Supported by his father, after finishing high school he travels to Madrid for a few months to see exhibitions and visit the Prado Museum. JOSÉ VELA ZANETTI (Milagros, Burgos, 1913 - Burgos, 1999). "Maternity", 1976. Oil on canvas. Damaged on the frame. Signed in the lower right corner. Size: 74 x 61 cm; 95 x 82 cm (frame). Two figures are the protagonists of the image completely alien to the spectator. Their disposition and appearance invites us to remember the nativity images as both protagonists give off a certain halo of mysticism and religiosity that reminds us of invocations such as the Virgin of the Milk. Zanetti, however, presents us with real people who emerge from everyday life. They are depictions of ordinary human beings working from sunrise to sunset, a trait that was common in his painting. Zanetti is the painter of the dignity of man, and in fact all his work revolves around the human being, both that produced in Spain and the works he painted during his long exile in the Dominican Republic, and this image is a witness to this, as it presents us with a mother and her child in emphatic and monumental forms through a post-cubist aesthetic in which the artist plays with the intersection between planes, which he generates through a masterful use of colour. Born in Milagros, in the province of Burgos, he moved to León with his family when he was a child. There he held his first exhibition in 1931. Supported by his father, after finishing high school he travelled to Madrid for a few months to see exhibitions and visit the Prado Museum. In 1951 the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation in New York awarded him a grant for a singular project: the creation of a large-scale mural for one of the main areas of the United Nations headquarters to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This project definitively catapulted the master from Burgos, and is today considered his most important work both for its symbolic relevance and for its expressiveness and artistic quality. He himself said of this work: "I hope that those who contemplate this mural will realise that peace must be won, not once and forever, but every day, remembering the sufferings of the past and making real what men aspire to for the future". Est: -

Jose Vela Zanetti (1913 - 1999) "Cabeza De Mujer" Oil on Canvas. José Vela Zanetti is one of the most meaningful Spanish artists of the 20th Century. A native of Burgos in northern Spain, Zanetti is also known as a representative of 'Muralismo', a special type of wall painting. He completed his art studies in Madrid with his teacher, José Ramon Zaragoza. An educational journey brought him to Italy in 1933 thanks to obtaining a scholarship from the Diputación, a stay that marked him deeply after studying the works of the great Italian masters. In 1951 with a Guggenheim fellowship, Zanetti traveled to New York, where he made the preparatory sketches for one of his masterpieces: the United Nations Headquarters Mural. He would also participate in an exhibition "12 Spanish Artists" organized by the Schaeffer Gallery in New York, where he appeared alongside other artists such as Picasso, Juan Gris and Miró. In 1960 after his return to Spain, he began to compose his famous peasant scenes, without abandoning the Latin American attributes inherited from the great Mexican muralists. In 1997, the Vela Zanetti Foundation opened in Leon, exhibiting 50 of his paintings and a mural.
