Philipp Veit Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1793 - d. 1877

Philipp Veit (13 February 1793 – 18 December 1877) was a German Romantic painter. It is to Veit that the credit of having been the first to revive the nearly forgotten technique of fresco painting is due.

Veit was born in Berlin, Prussia. He was the son of a banker Simon Veit and his wife Dorothea, daughter of Moses Mendelssohn, who subsequently left him to marry Friedrich Schlegel. Veit received his first art education in Dresden, where he was taught by Caspar David Friedrich,[2] and Vienna. Although a prodigious talent when it came to drawing, Veit was not comfortable with oil painting, for which reason in Vienna he took to the medium of watercolour. In Vienna, he made the acquaintance of Schlegel, and through him came to know several Viennese Romantics, one of whom was the poet and novelist Joseph von Eichendorff.[2] He was strongly influenced by, and joined, the Nazarene movement in Rome, where he worked for some years before moving to Frankfurt.[1]

Veit participated in the struggle against Napoleon in 1813–14, returning to Berlin for a short period. In 1815, he finished the Virgin with Christ and St John, a votive painting for the church of St James in Heiligenstadt, Vienna. The painting was inspired by the style of Pietro Perugino and Raphael.[2]

In Frankfurt, where his most important works are preserved at the Städel, he was active from 1830 to 1843 as director of the art collections and as professor of painting. From 1853 till his death in 1877 he held the post of director of the municipal gallery in Mainz. Like his fellow Nazarenes he was more draughtsman than painter, and though his sense of colour was stronger than that of Overbeck or Cornelius, his works are generally more of the nature of coloured cartoons than of paintings in the modern sense.[1]

Veit's principal work is the large fresco of The Introduction of Christianity into Germany by St Boniface, at the Städel. In the Frankfurt Cathedral is his Assumption, while the Alte Nationalgalerie of Berlin has his painting of The Two Marys at the Sepulchre.[1] An example of his romantic work is Germania, a national personification of Germany, located in the Städelsches Kunstinstitut.

Veit died in Mainz.

Philipp Veit (1793 Berlin - 1877 Mainz): Hunter with two hunting dogs and prey, 19th century, Pencil Technique: Pencil on Paper Stamp: Verso Collector's stamp, Lugt no.: 1159. Georg Hamminger (gest. 1895). Regensburg. 19th century Inscription: inscribed lower right: "Veit Date: 19th century Description: Philipp Veit's name is closely associated with Nazarene art. In 1815, Moses Mendelssohn's grandson joined the Lukasbund around Friedrich Overbeck in Rome and participated in the frescoes of the Casa Bartholdy and the Casino Massimo. From 1830 onwards, he was responsible for turning the Städel Art Institute into a Nazarene stronghold in Germany under his leadership. His religious motifs, along with those of Friedrich Overbeck, still have a decisive influence on the image of that group of artists. Therefore, our drawing is of particular interest, because it is one of those few evidences that Veit also dealt with subjects outside religious art and portraiture. The sheet, marked on the front and back, shows a hunter with his two dogs hunting (the back shows the hunter with his shotgun cocked). Since the figure is a nude study, Veit seems to have only clarified the composition here. He will elaborate on the details in a next step. He has already worked through the rough outlines with a few small variations. The drawing will therefore probably have been followed by an oil painting, which is unfortunately no longer known today. Since the motif is relatively singular in Veit's oeuvre, it is obvious to see in the hunter depicted the artist's long-time patron, Franz von Bernus, with whom Veit himself often went hunting. Bernus not only had his wife portrayed by Veit, but also ordered further works from the artist and donated a painting for the Kaisersaal in the Frankfurt Römer. Est: €450 - €600

Philipp Veit (1793 Berlin - 1877 Mainz): People's Assembly in Heidelberg, , Lithography Technique: Lithography on Paper Inscription: Lower right signed: "Philipp Veit inv.". At the lower part inscribed by the artist's hand: "Bürgermeister Winter hält Robert Blum". Date: Description: Little is known about the activity of the history painter and Nazarene artist Philipp Veit as a caricaturist. In fact, like other Nazarenes who are more associated with religious motifs, he also produced a number of caricatures, among which political themes on the German Revolution of 1848 account for the largest share. The fact that Veit, like his pupil Eduard von Steinle, "lived in the focal point of the revolutionary events in Frankfurt was bound to provoke them to caricature". (Suhr 1985, p. 148) The present lithograph, on the other hand, turns to an event that did not take place in Frankfurt but in Heidelberg. The event to which the caricature alludes could not be clearly identified, except by the inscription "Volksversammlung in Heidelberg". The childlike figure in the arms of the wildly grinning man in the wide robe represents the member of the National Assembly Robert Blum. Attempts to identify the standing figure have so far named the deputies Friedrich Ludwig Jahn (1778-1852), Christian Friedrich Winter (also mayor of Heidelberg) or Carl Joseph Anton Mittermaier (1787-1867), and even went so far as to see something diabolical in the figure. An exact attribution is also not possible because the event that connects the clearly recognisable Blum with Heidelberg cannot be narrowed down either. Three drawings of Roman Vedutae, attributed to Ph. Veit, 1820s

    Est: €1,200 - €1,600

Pencil and water colour on artist's board; ink Italy / Germany, around 1820 Attributed to Philipp Veit (1793-1877) - German painter Two are signed in the lower right "[...] VEIT" Drawings by Philipp Veits fetch up to 8.000 Euros at international auctions Partially inscribed with ink Overall dimensions each, framed: 42.5 x 52.5 cm Very good condition These three drawings have most likely been made during one of Philipp Veit's stay in Italy. The veduta are kept in this artist's style whose drawings stand out due to a certain reservation and restraint. One of the three shows the "Isola Tiberina" in almost graphic reduction. The second one depicts a very linear and strict architecture in a "Veduta di Grottaferrata" who is only animated through the ox cart in the lower left. The third piece is a rather darkly water coloured drawing and shows an impressive arcade of massive carved stone pillars. All three drawings are in very good condition. They are identically framed, with a few traces of age and wear on the frames. The two signed drawings show a slightly untypical signature written in block letters. The curve of the "P" is missing or has been carelessly written so that it resembles an "F" rather strongly. The overall dimensions each, framed, are 42.5 x 52.5 cm, the passe-partout cut-outs are 25 x 37 cm. Philipp Veit (1793-1877) Philipp Veit studied at the Academy in Dresden since 1808, where he became friends with Joseph von Eichendorff. He moved to Rome in 1815 where he joined the German romanticist group "Lukasbund". He painted several frescos, amongst them those in the Casa Bartholdy and the Villa Massimo and in some churches. He became director of the Städelsche Institut in Frankfurt in 1830 where he also painted some frescos. In 1853 he was named director of the collection of paintings in Mainz. Several of his paintings are in Frankfurt and in Mainz, but also in the Museum Folkwang and other museums.
