Each piece is stackable and multi-functional; cups and bowls double as jars and canisters, with plates serving as lids. A gold medal winner at La Triennale di Milano in 1960, this melamine series is now represented in the permanent collections at both MoMA and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. KRISTIAN SOLMER VEDEL (Denmark, 1923 - 2003). Modus table, 1960s. Rosewood and black leather upholstery. Measurements: 90 x 90 x 66 cm. Designed by Vedel, the Modus table has a solid rosewood frame and black leather upholstery. The legs, narrower towards the base, add sophistication to the structure, as does the gently curved waist. A Danish industrial designer belonging to the Scandinavian Design movement, Kristian Vedel completed his training as a cabinetmaker in 1942, and between 1944 and 1945 he furthered his studies with Kaare Klint in the furniture department of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. In 1946 he graduated from the School of Arts, Crafts and Design in the same city, specializing in furniture design. His figure will be key in the Danish panorama of the time, and in fact he will be president of the association of Danish furniture designers between 1947 and 1949, and again between 1966 and 1968. Between the latter date and 1971 he worked at the University of Nairobi, where he founded the Department of Industrial Design, and on his return to Denmark he set up his own furniture design studio. Influenced by Kaare Klint and the German Bauhaus, Vedel created designs considered modern classics, based on a creative use of materials, especially plastics and wood, with a clear interest in ergonomics and functionality. Throughout his brilliant career, Vedel was awarded important prizes such as the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers' Guild (1947), the Louisiana Museum Prize (1957), silver and gold medals at the Milan Triennale (1957), the Design Award at the Interplast in London (1961) and the Lunning Prize (1962). In 2007 the Trapholt Museum in Denmark dedicated an important retrospective exhibition to him.
