His reference AH 155.  This enigmatic landscape was made in 1953, a pivotal year in the artist’s career. Vaughan exhibited at the celebrated Leicester Galleries, where this work was shown, as well as part of the seminal show ‘Space in Colour’ at The Hanover Gallery curated by Patrick Heron, alongside the most celebrated figures of post-war British paintings such as William Scott, Victor Pasmore and Peter Lanyon. These events would bring his work to a wider audience and drive museums, including the Tate, to start purchasing his work.  In this painting, Vaughan has dispensed with all figures and any literary references to explore pure landscape, using it as a cypher for his psychic state and dislocated understanding of the world around him. Despite the rigorous structure of the composition, there is a bodily quality to the curved forms of the landscape that locates the work within the artist's personal experiences. There is an economy to composition, with its autumnal palette of browns, greys and greens, every form pulsing in dialogue with the next.  The work has been exhibited widely and internationally, including in New York and at the artist’s museum retrospective in Sheffield, demonstrating its importance within his oeuvre.

    Keith Vaughan,  Head in profile, 1948;

    Est: £7,000 - £9,000

    Keith Vaughan,  British 1912-1977 -  Head in profile, 1948;  gouache, ink and wax resist on paper, signed and dated lower right 'Keith Vaughan 48', 28 x 19.2 cm (ARR)  Note:  the present work demonstrates the deep connection with Vaughan's contemporary Robert Colquhoun of the late 1940s, in both its formal innovations and emotional impact. The highly graphic quality of the work also relates to a series of monotypes Vaughan made in 1948, 'Girl by a Row of Cottages, 1948' and 'Figure in a Churchyard, 1948' (both now in the Tate collection), a medium that was highly important to Colquhoun's practice, and which invites an element of spontaneity and experimentation when looking at the figure. Here Vaughan carves the figure's face in heaving lines of ink overlaying the wax resist technique that was central to Henry Moore's works on paper, to create a highly evocative image, that relates to a more fractured approach to the human figure in Post-War British art.  The work is possibly a portrait of either his lover Johnny Walsh or John McGuinness, one of Vaughan's most frequent models.  With thanks to Anthony Hepworth for his assistance with the cataloguing of the work.

Provenance The artist, from whom acquired by Peter Adam (1929-2019), thence by family descent We are grateful to Gerard Hastings and Anthony Hepworth for their assistance in cataloguing this lot. During the early 1950s, drawing became an essential ingredient in Vaughan’s creative life. He drew still-life subjects and life-drawings, designs for magazines and book illustrations and made presentation or ‘table drawings.’ Drawing provided the raw material for his painting and he made many drawing trips to the south coast, the landscapes of Yorkshire, Berkshire, Ireland and France to gather material. In 1963 he exhibited drawings at the Biennale in Sao Paolo and three further drawing exhibitions took place between 1967 and 1969 in London and Manchester. By now he had accumulated a wide vocabulary of graphic marks including novel ways to shade, hatch and delineate form. He wrote in his journal 6th January 1964: "There must be some way of using the brush and colour with the same spontaneity as the pencil. I should have found this out by now. What a difference it would make if painting just went along, with the same total involvement as drawing.’ We are grateful to Gerard Hastings for compiling this catalogue entry.
