Vaszary, Galerie Semiha Huber, December 1964–January 1965, no. 9 (with ill.; label on the reverse). - Zurich 1967, Jubilee exhibition, Galerie Semiha Huber (label on the reverse). The present works 'Lady in a Lounger' and 'Bay of Rapallo' (lot 3230) were painted in the 1930s and are masterful examples of Vaszary's mature late work. After World War I — he had served on the Serbian front between 1914 and 1918 and experienced the horrors of war first-hand — the artist concentrated primarily on 'the beautiful things in life’ and painted exclusively carefree scenes. The works from the 1930s are highly recognisable with their bold fields of colour and are also frontrunners in the art market. The importance of Vaszary for modern Hungarian painting and thus also for European art history is noted by Dr. Gábor Ö. Pogány in the preface to the exhibition catalogue of the 1964 János Vaszary exhibition at Galerie Sehima Huber in Zurich: "János Vaszary was one of the artists who played an essential role in the Hungarian intelligentsia's fight for intellectual freedom at the beginning of the century and revolutionised the then still largely feudal culture. Vaszary played no small part in bringing European thought and taste to Hungary" (translated from German). --------------- JÁNOS VASZARY (Kaposvár 1867–1939 Budapest) Frau im Liegestuhl (Nyugágyas nő). 1934. János Vaszary is one of the most important and influential artists of Hungarian modernism. Initially active in Hungary and Munich, the inquisitive artist was drawn to Paris in 1899, where he attended the Académie Julien. His stay in Paris and his examination of the contemporary French art movements of Symbolism, Post-Impressionism and Fauvism significantly influenced his work. Vaszary is regarded as a restless and imaginative painter who was constantly developing his style. He combined his sense for modern trends, which he later passed on to his students at the Hungarian University of Arts, with his exceptional talent as a colourist. From the estate of Galerie Semiha Huber in Zurich, we are pleased to offer four wonderful works by János Vaszary (lots 3228–3231). The early, large-format painting 'Teichstadt landscape (Tóvárosi tájkép)' from 1913 reflects Vaszary's exploration of the local landscape. 'Tóváros' is part of the Hungarian town of Tata, where Vaszary owned a house. Ausstellung: Budapest 1913, Művészház, Nr. 943 (verso mit Etikett). János Vaszary gehört zu den bedeutendsten und einflussreichsten Künstlern der ungarischen Moderne. Zuerst in Ungarn und München tätig, zieht es den wissbegierigen Künstler 1899 nach Paris, wo er die Académie Julien besucht. Dieser Aufenthalt und die Auseinandersetzung mit den zeitgenössischen französischen Kunstbewegungen des Symbolismus, Postimpressionismus und des Fauvismus beeinflussen sein Werk massgeblich. Vaszary gilt als rastloser und einfallsreicher Maler, der seinen Stil ständig weiterentwickelte. Dieses Gespür für moderne Tendenzen, welches er später auch seinen Studenten an der künstlerischen Universität Ungarns weitergab, verband er mit einem grossen Talent als Kolorist. Aus dem Nachlass der Galerie Semiha Huber in Zürich dürfen wir vier wunderbare Werke János Vaszarys anbieten (Los 3228–3231). Dieses frühe, grossformatige Gemälde "Landschaft von Teichstadt (Tóvárosi tájkép)" aus dem Jahre 1913 zeugt von der Auseinandersetzung Vaszarys mit der Landschaft seines Heimatlandes. „Tóváros“ ist ein Teil der Stadt Tata in Ungarn, wo Vaszary ein Haus besass. Die Art der Pinselführung und die Anwendung der Farbe erinnern an die Bildsprache der Fauvisten rund um Matisse.

    Janos Miklos Vaszary (1867 - 1939) original oil painting on beveled panel signed and dated 1902 lower left. Janos Miklos Vaszary was active/lived in Hungary, France. Measures 15-in. x 10-in. image size and 21.75-in. x 17-in. framed. The wood panel has some splits. However, there is no evidence of any restoration, repairs or inpainting. Provenance: originally from the estate of Aladar Loewy, art dealer NYC, 1930's-40's. If lot is absent of a condition report one may be requested via email. Condition report is provided as an opinion only and is no guarantee as condition can be subjective. Buyer must view photographs or scans to assist in determining condition and ask further questions if so desired. Our in-house shipping department will gladly pack and ship any item that fits into a 14x14x14 inch or 30x5x24 inch or equivalent or smaller box/folio if it is not fragile or over 25lbs. We will charge for labor to pack and process based on actual time it takes, actual cost of materials used to pack and actual shipper charges that will include insurance and signature required. We generally use USPS and Fed Ex and compare the pricing between the two. Books maximum box size will be 14x14x14 inch or equivalent and will be shipped USPS Media Mail unless otherwise requested. We gladly will give shipping estimates prior to auction. Please make this request at least 24 hours prior to auction for our shipping department to respond. If your invoice is for multiple items, we will use our discretion on requiring the use of an outside shipper.
