    • Attributed to Bartholomeus van der Helst (1613-1670) - Presumed Portrait of the painter Paulus Potter
      Oct. 09, 2024

Attributed to Bartholomeus van der Helst (1613-1670) - Presumed Portrait of the painter Paulus Potter

      Est: €8,000 - €12,000

Oil on canvas 80 x 67 cm (unframed), 92 x 78 cm (framed). Magnificent portrait attributed to Bartholomeus van der Helst, which bears similarities to other portraits by the artist, in particular that of the painter Paulus Potter, painted in 1654. Portrait with signature at the top left dated 1651, where the similarities with the portrait made of the same artist three years later can be seen. Bartholomeus van der Helst, born in Haarlem in 1613 and established in Amsterdam since 1627, is considered one of the main portrait painters of the Dutch Golden Age. His elegant and realistic portraits earned him the patronage of the Amsterdam elite and the stathouder circle. In addition to portraits, he also painted biblical and mythological scenes and some genre works. He was the preferred portrait painter of the wealthy Amsterdam bourgeoisie, and his popularity continued throughout the 18th century. His works, often signed and dated, span the period from 1634 to 1669 and are characterised by a sober and elegant style, with neutral backgrounds and a limited palette. Provenance: French private collection.

BARTHOLOMEUS VAN DER HELST (Haarlem, 1613-Amsterdam, 1670). "Portrait of a lady", 1654. Oil on canvas. Provenance: Anna Ruiz Gallery in Barcelona.

      Est: €50,000 - €60,000

BARTHOLOMEUS VAN DER HELST (Haarlem, 1613-Amsterdam, 1670). "Portrait of a lady", 1654. Oil on canvas. Provenance: Anna Ruiz Gallery in Barcelona. Measurements: 72 x 61 cm; 95 x 82 cm (frame). Bartholomeus van der Helst was a reputed Dutch portraitist, contemporary of Rembrandt. The portrait of a lady in question belongs to a period of maturity, when he had already become the most sought-after portraitist among the Amsterdam gentry. The pictorial quality can be appreciated in every detail: the somewhat worn flesh tones, but with traces of candor that envelop the cheeks, the natural shine of the eyes thanks to a masterful handling of the glazes, the silky reflections of the curls, the pleats of the puffed sleeves, the texture of the soft cotton of the blouse on the velvet dress.... Likewise, a remarkable handling of light plays with the hallmarks between black and white, modeling the hands and the face with great naturalistic skill. Born in Haarlem, son of an innkeeper, van der Heist moved to Amsterdam. His first dated painting was a group portrait of the regents of the Walloon orphanage, dated 1637. It is not known from whom he learned to paint, but in Haarlem he must have at least known the work of Frans Hals, who like him, never traveled to Italy and specialized in portraiture. In 1639 he obtained his own commission, "The Company of Captain Roelof Bicker and Lieutenant Jan Michielsz Blaeuw". In Amsterdam he may have trained with Nicolaes Eliasz. Pickenoy. He soon became the city's most famous portraitist, with flattering portraits in the vein of Anthony van Dyck, more commercial than Rembrandt's dark and introspective late work. Some of Rembrandt's disciples, such as Ferdinand Bol and Govaert Flinck, adopted van der Helst's style rather than that of their master. His large group portrait "The Civic Guard of Amsterdam Celebrates the Peace of Münster" was executed in 1648, and presented with considerable success. It was this painting that achieved his fame among future generations, according to Arnold Houbraken, and was admired by Godfried Kneller. Another well-remembered painting by Van der Helst is that of Gerard Andriesz Bicker, son of Andries Bicker, the mayor of Amsterdam, whom he also painted in 1642. This portrait is often used to depict obesity as a symbol of wealth of the Amsterdam merchants of the Dutch Golden Age in Amsterdam. It was probably painted in 1639, the same year as the first schutterstuk where Roelof Bicker is the central figure.

After Bartholomeus van der Helst (Dutch, 1613-1670) Portrait of a man at his desk holding pince-nez, three-quarter length, 17th century Oil on canvas 44 x 39-1/4 inches (111.8 x 99.7 cm) PROVENANCE: (Possibly) Jean Frederic d'Orville, by 1809; (With) Galerías La Granja, Mexico City, Mexico, after 1930 (as Govaert Flinck, Portrait of an Old Man); Private collection. LITERATURE: J. van Gent, Bartolomeus van der Helst(ca. 1613-1670): een studie naar zijn leven en werk, 2011, pp. 220-221, mention of a copy that is possibly this work. This portrait of a bearded man is an excellent copy of the 1651 portrait of a man by Bartholomeus van der Helst, probably incorrectly identified as Petrus Scriverius (Schrijver), which is preserved in the collection of the Stedelijk Museum De Lakenhal, Leiden, The Netherlands (inv./cat. no. 1445). In her monograph and catalogue raisonné on van der Helst, Judith van Gent mentions two copies of the Leiden original: one in a collection in Wolfenbüttel, Germany, in which the man appears to be standing, and the other in the 1809 inventory of the collection from which the original in Leiden came, described as ‘Een dito verbeeldende hetzelfde voorwerp [een geleerde zittende in zijn studeerkamer, genaamd Man met de Baard] gecopieerd na het eerstgenoemde [...]' (Ditto, depicting the same object [a scholar sitting in his study called Man with a Beard] copied after the aforementioned). The latter may be the present painting. We are grateful to Dr. Fred G. Meijer for his expertise essential to the cataloguing of this lot. HID01801242017

The half-portrait shows a blond boy with his torso turned slightly, looking happily at the viewer. On the boy's right hand sits a goldfinch, which the boy points to with a certain pride. His rosy complexion and the blonde strands of hair give him a vital look. The boy is wearing a grey Justaucorps over a white vest. The lace tie is decorated with a red silk loop. The picture is framed by an oval, painted wreath. It is most likely from a family gallery.

BARTHOLOMEUS VAN DER HELST About 1613 Haarlem - Before 16 December 1670 Amsterdam PORTRAIT OF A SEATED YOUNG MAN IN A BLACK ROBE, ABOUT 1660 Oil on canvas (relined). 123 x 96 cm (F. 132 x 105 cm). Part. min. old restored. Frame. Attached expert opinion by Dr. Walther Bernt dated 24 May 1952: Bernt writes: 'The oil painting on canvas .... Portrait of a gentleman, three-quarter figure, sitting in a red-covered chair to the right, looking towards the viewer, a letter in the left hand, the right hand with a speaking gesture, long brunette curled hair, black robe, in the background a gathered curtain with a coat of arms in the upper left corner - is an impeccable, characteristic and very well preserved work by the Amsterdam portrait painter Bartholomeus van der Helst 1613-1670 from the time around 1660. A whole series of identical portraits of the same size is known. Maybe the present painting is identical with the portrait of a gentleman of the same size in the auction Rochehousseau in Paris on 5.5.1873, No 85, which is listed in the oeuvre of J.J. de Gelder, B. van der Helst (1921) under No 396'. Literatur: Wahrscheinlich identisch mit: Jan Jacob de Gelder, Bartholomeus van der Helst Literature: Probably identical with: Jan Jacob de Gelder, Bartholomeus van der Helst (1921), no. 396. Provenienz: Hessische Privatsammlung. Wahrscheinlich: Auktion Rochehousseau in Paris am Provenienz: Hessian Private Collection. Probably auction Rochehousseau, Paris on 5.5.1873 no. 85. BARTHOLOMEUS VAN DER HELST Um 1613 Haarlem - Vor dem 16. Dezember 1670 Amsterdam BILDNIS EINES SITZENDEN JUNGEN MANNES IN SCHWARZER ROBE, UM 1660 Öl auf Leinwand (doubl.). 123 x 96 cm (R. 132 x 105 cm). Part. min. altrest. Rahmen.

Anmerkung: Hofrat Dr. phil.
