(Coulommiers, 1591 - Roma, 1632) Concerto con bevitore Olio su tela, cm 88X115 Provenienza: Vienna, Dorotheum, 19 dicembre 2016, lotto 68 (probabilmente) L'iconografia conta diverse redazioni riferite alla cerchia o a un seguace di Valentin de Boulogne. La composizione, infatti, trova confronto con quella esitata presso la Sotheby's di New York il 9 giugno lotto 83 e classificata quale opera di un seguace del celebre maestro francese, che mostra lievi varianti e si puÃ² riconoscere in quella dell'archivio Zeri giudicata dallo studioso di Bartolomeo Manfredi (Cfr. Archivio Zeri n. 46547). Sempre Zeri ne segnala una terza di ubicazione sconosciuta, data ad anonimo del XVII secolo (Cfr. Archivio Zeri n. 98520). La composizione piÃ¹ nota Ã¨ quella custodita nella collezione Chigi Saracini (Cfr. Moiana, p. 234, n. 136) che recava un'attribuzione a Manfredi data dal Brandi e poi dal Longhi declassata a copia da un originale perduto di Valentin. La scena ricalca indubbiamente i modelli manfrediani con un gruppo di musici attorno a un tavolo e il bevitore al centro. Bibliografia di riferimento: M. Literature: The two present works are mentioned and reproduced in: Benedict Nicolson, Caravaggism in Europe, second edition, revised and enlarged by Luisa Vertova, vol. I, Allemandi, 1989, pp. 204/5. Certificate: Leonard Slatkes, Professor of Art History, 1988: “There is little doubt that the present pair of Valentin represent the earliest (of the other versions) Manfredi inspired phase of the artist’s development and should be placed into the period between about 1618 and 1620. As with many of the northern followers of Caravaggio reached their artistic maturity in Rome... it was the example of Manfredi that Valentin... turned to for inspiration rather than directly to Caravaggio himself.... Certainly the present pair of Valentin paintings are important examples of ‘Manfredian methodus’ and thus significant not only for our understanding of Valentin’s early development but for the entire northern Caravaggesque development in Rome... Furthermore, their superior quality and directness of execution make it obvious that the present pair of pictures are the prime versions and those in Copenhagen merely good old copies, as several art historians had already suggested”.
