  • Lucas Valdés (Seville, 1661 - Cadiz, 1724) "Jesus before the Doctors in the Temple of Jerusalem"

    Est: €9,000 - €10,000

Lucas Valdés (Seville, 1661 - Cadiz, 1724) "Jesus before the Doctors in the Temple of Jerusalem" Oil on canvas 147 x 209 cm 9.000 - 10.000 € Certified by Dr. Enrique Valdivieso In the opinion of the emeritus professor of the University of Seville, it would be a collaboration between Lucas Valdés and his father, based on a previous work by Valdés Leal. This explains why its composition, with an abundance of characters and large architectures, so much to the taste of Lucas, shows in its execution vibrant and free brushstrokes, typical of Valdés Leal, as are the faces of the Virgin and some secondary characters. The layer of rusty varnish and dirt has recently been removed

LUCAS VALDES. Seville (1661) / Cadiz (1724). "The Marriage of the Virgin and Saint Joseph".

    Est: €9,000 - €18,000

62,5 x 83,2 cm. Oil on canvas. This painting was part of a set of six scenes from the Life of the Virgin published by Aureliano de Beruete in 1911 as by Juan de Valdés Leal. They belonged at the time to the collection of Sir Edgar Vincent, 1st Viscount D'Abernon. The set had previously belonged to Benigno Vega-Inclán, Marquis of Vega-Inclán. In 1912-14 they were exhibited at the Grafton Galleries in London as being by Juan de Valdés Leal. This attribution was maintained by several researchers who subsequently published the paintings. Mayer, in 1928, suggested that they were by Matías de Arteaga, while modern researchers of Valdés Leal (Kinkead, Valdivieso) do not consider them to be by the master but by his circle. The paintings in the series were dispersed, along with the rest of the viscount's collection, with the crisis of 1929. Two of the paintings in the series ("Presentation of the Virgin in the Temple" and "Adoration of the Magi") have been in the Museo Nacional de San Carlos, Mexico, since the 1930s, catalogued by Pérez Sánchez as by Matías de Arteaga. This painting of "The Marriage of the Virgin and Saint Joseph" reappears in Spain as part of the collection of the Philatelic Forum and is catalogued by Professor Ismael Gutiérrez Pastor as a work by Lucas Valdés, the son of Valdés Leal. It is likely that the important Spanish Baroque style frame of the painting is from the time when it belonged to Sir Edgar Vincent.
